Hardly any other region is as varied as the Danube region in Upper Austria. From the wooded riverbanks in the Upper Danube Valley to the fertile plains of the Eferding Basin and Machland to the rugged rock formations in the once feared Strudengau.


The breathtaking natural landscape must be conquered step by step, with incredible panoramic views of the river from above.

The Donausteig leads along both banks of the river from Passau via Linz to Grein through varied natural and cultural landscapes. Hikers encounter wondrous legendary figures, impressive landscapes and unique cultural treasures along the way. It's obvious - the Donausteig is simply legendary!



Divided into 2 routes


The Donausteig leads from Passau via Linz to Grein via the north and south route. To give a better overview of the Donausteig, it has been divided into 23 stages.




49 Donausteig-Runden
Branching off from the main route, numerous paths lead into the Danube hinterland, allowing you to experience the region even more intensively. The 49 Donausteig loops are perfect for day trips, as the circular tours always return to the starting point.

Optimal integration of train, bus and boat
Excursion hikers can thus make the arrival and return to the starting point.

Hiking in the realm of legends & art on the Donausteig:


120 Danube legends, retold by Helmut Wittmann and illustrated by Jakob Kirchmayr, are displayed on the overview boards. Metal sculptures by the artist Miguel Horn can be admired at special places in the open-air gallery along the Donausteig.

Starting point: Passau - the Donausteig-Starting Point South "Passau" is located in the city center directly in front of the main exit of the main train station.
Destination: Grein - the Donausteig destination point "Grein" is located on the Donaulände in a green strip between the main road and parking lots.

Accessibility / arrival

Getting there
Passau's main railway station is located on the headland of the town's peak approx. 350 m west of the Schanzbrücke bridge (navigation: D-94032 Passau, Hauptbahnhof).
Public Transit

Passau can be easily reached by train and bus. Information about travel times can be found at www.vlp-passau.de.


A return transfer from Grein to Passau main station is easily possible by train. It is only a short walk from the Donaulände Grein to the train station. You can find information about travel times at www.ooevv.at .


Parking

Most of the city center of Passau is a short-term parking zone. There are numerous paid parking garages and parking lots available for long-term parking. Information about their locations and prices can be found here.
