The market town of Aschach an der Donau is located in the centre of the beautiful Danube valley and impresses with its charming promenade and medieval town houses. Panorama tour

Circular hike in the beautiful Pesenbachtal nature reserve with magnificent views of the Eferding basin and the Danube valley. Starting from the Hotel Faustschlössl, this tour leads along the Donausteig trail to the spa town of Bad Mühllacken. There you will find the Bad Mühllacken spa centre, a medicinal herb garden, a forest bath and the nature reserve. Here you can also take a hike to the Kerzenstein - a real hiking classic in the Pesenbach Valley! Then it's back uphill along the Donausteig trail towards Unterhart and along the Prälatensteig trail back to the Hotel Faustschlössl.

This easy hike leads from the Feldkirchen an der Donau community centre through the Danube wetlands to the Feldkirchen bathing lakes and back again. Numerous leisure activities await along the route, such as the Feldkirchen motor skills park, the aquapark and the wakeboard facility as well as a pump track. This circular route also offers plenty of culinary delights: you can enjoy a hearty snack at S'Mostvierterl, while the Thalhammers restaurant serves excellent food with a fantastic view of the lake from the terrace.

Meandering through the Eferding Basin

This cycle tour takes you through the fertile Eferding basin, past vegetable fields and magnificent square farms. River cycling along the mighty Danube with only a slight incline - a real highlight. Starting from Aschach, you cycle along the Danube to Pupping(Pupping Monastery & farm shops) and on to Eferding. Numerous shopping opportunities and culinary highlights such as the Vogl and Weltzer patisseries await. The route continues through the Eferding basin to the beautiful Danube market town of Ottensheim. Refreshment and bathing fun can be found at the Feldkirchen bathing lakes, and the Thalhammers with its lake view also has plenty of culinary delights to offer. Return via Feldkirchen to the Danube market town of Aschach.

On the Danube Cycle Path R1 to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Schlögen

From Aschach to Schlögen, stage 2 of the Danube Cycle Path leads upstream along the southern bank of the Danube. You cycle past wooded slopes and through small villages to the natural wonder of Schlögener Schlinge. This is the location of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Römerbad & Römerpark Schlögen. The digital tour guide Severinus of Noricum explains the history of the World Heritage Site on the Danube Limes in a simple and fun way using VR visualisation.

Hike to the Schlögener Blick

It is also worth taking a hike to the Schlögener Blick with a fantastic view of the 360-degree bend in the Danube! After a strenuous cycling or hiking tour, you can end the day in a cosy atmosphere on the beautiful terrace at the Riverresort Donauschlinge.

The Danube market Aschach

In the Danube market town of Aschach, town houses from the Middle Ages and façades in the colours of the rainbow tell of the lives of the townspeople, boatmen and shippers. The historic town centre and market square can be visited on a cultural walk. The promenade invites you to take a stroll and you can enjoy the sun on the Danube beach. Tip: Get ice cream from the Weltzer patisserie and enjoy it on the promenade.

The Schopper and Fishermen's Museum can be reached via the Aschach culture trail, which leads from the church square to Schopperplatz and is equipped with ten media stations. On a night-time tour of Aschach with the night watchman , you can get to know Aschach from a completely different perspective, with many stories and legends, such as that of Dr Faust, being told here.

Thom Feichtner's art blowing workshop and glass manufactory is located directly on Schopperplatz, where he conjures up robust and artistic works of glass art in his own workshop. Glass has been lovingly handcrafted for over 30 years, and the design is particularly well-known under the name "blue danube wave", inspired by the workshop's location right next to the Danube.

Excursion to Feldkirchen on the Danube

Feldkirchen an der Donau offers plenty of fun and action for water sports enthusiasts and active people. With the four swimming lakes, the wakeboard facility and the water ski lift with Austria's largest aquapark, there's plenty of fun to be had in the water. There is also a playground, a large motor skills park and a pump track. Not far from the bathing lakes is one of the most beautiful golf courses, the Donau Golf Club (9- and 18-hole course). Tuscany feeling in the Danube region, right next to the Puchner campsite.

TheCurhaus Bad Mühllacken is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pesenbach Valley and specialises in fasting and conscious nutrition. At the Curhaus it is also possible to spend a feel-good day as part of a day spa programme. The Gasthaus Wögerer, the Mostvierterl, the Thalhammers and the Schlagerwirt have plenty of culinary delights to offer with traditional Austrian home cooking and are ideal for a successful end to a day trip.

The Donaumarkt Ottensheim is located directly on the Danube cycle path and on the R1.09 Eferdinger Land route and is easily accessible from Aschach. The town impresses with its idyllic atmosphere directly on the Danube, its historic market centre with romantic alleyways and its unmistakable character.

Water sports enthusiasts can use the international regatta course on the Old Danube, while inline skaters can glide along the riverside paths. The traditional Friday market also takes place in Ottensheim every Friday. In bad weather, the historic cinema invites you to enjoy a film with popcorn, while beer enthusiasts can book guided tours of the Ottensheim brewery in advance.

The Donaumarkt also has plenty to offer sports enthusiasts: the Ottensheim leisure centre, including a bike and motor skills park with pump track, playground and volleyball courts, is ideal for playing sports and letting off steam. The Danube Bus ferry also runs from Ottensheim to Linz and back, ideal for a short visit to the provincial capital.

Travelling by bike: cross the Danube bridge at Aschach, then follow the Danube cycle path R1 and cycle directly along the Danube past the Feldkirchen bathing lakes to Ottensheim. Duration: 55 min. Alternatively, you can cycle along the R1.09 Eferdinger Land Runde.

Day trip: Shopping & gourmet trip to Eferding

Cycling to Eferding for shopping and sightseeing

The historic town in the centre of Upper Austria's vegetable garden. You can stroll through Eferding along magnificent house facades, past traditional cafés serving regional delicacies straight from the surrounding area. Individual and special boutiques attract visitors to the town centre, but the large Stöcker fashion store and Trachten Holzinger are also ideal for shopping in Eferding. Austria's third oldest town also has a lot to offer culturally with the magnificent Starhemberg Castle. The Eferding parish church, popularly known as the "Eferding Cathedral", is also one of the most important churches in Upper Austria.

Travelling by bike: On the R1 Danube cycle path stage 2 south bank fromAschach to Brandstatt and here on the R18 Eferdinger Landlweg to Eferding (approx. 4km). A slightly longer cycle route across the vegetable gardens of the basin leads via the R1.09 Eferdinger Land-Runde pleasure cycle route from Brandstatt to Eferding (approx. 7km).

Day trip to Pupping for those interested in culture

Not far from Eferding lies the municipality of Pupping, whose cultural highlights make it an ideal day trip for those interested in culture. The centre of attraction is the beautiful Franciscan monastery in Pupping with its monastery garden, spacious herb snail and meditation path. The monastery's own shop sells handicrafts and home-made products. The Gemüselust play park is a special kind of playground - where else can you climb in a giant carrot and hop on a tomato? The park not only offers plenty of space to run around, but also introduces visitors to vegetables in general and the vegetable region of Pupping. The children get to know and appreciate the vegetables of the region in a playful way.

Travelling by bike: from Aschach on the R1.09 Eferdinger Land-Runde along the Danube and via Brandstatt to Pupping, duration: 20 min.

Day trip to the Hofstetten brewery for beer enthusiasts

Means of transport: E-bike

Beer enthusiasts can also enjoy a combined cycle tour to the Hofstetten brewery in St. Martin. The Landbräuhaus Hofstetten, the oldest brewery in Austria (since 1229), is nestled in the middle of the Mühlviertel granite landscape. A particularly fine hop grows here and the various types of beer are also refined with Mühlviertel organic raw materials. All these regional specialities can be purchased directly from the brewery. In addition to inexpensive, fresh beer, there are also many gift ideas and lovingly prepared gift baskets for every occasion.

Getting to the brewery: cycle over the Aschach Danube bridge and then along the north bank of the Danube cycle path (stage 2) to the Untermühl - Bremsberg ferry. Continue by ferry to Untermühl and then via Untermühler Bezirksstraße and Falkenberg Straße to Ritzersdorf. From here it is only a few minutes to the Hofstetten brewery in Adsdorf. Attention: please note the current ferry times for the outward and return journey!

Cider tasting at the Fischgasthof Aumüller

If you prefer to sample cider and wine instead of beer, the Fischgasthof Aumüller in Obermühl is just the place for you. In addition to excellent local ciders and juices, they also serve freshly caught Danube fish straight to your plate. Seasonal specialities and a good cider snack round off the offer. A perfect place to stop for refreshments during or after a strenuous cycle tour!

Travelling by bike

Starting from Aschach, the Danube cycle path south bank (stage 2) continues along the Danube to the Kobling-Obermühl ferry. Take the ferry to the other bank and cycle through the village to the Fischgasthof. Please note: check the current ferry times for the outward and return journey!

Day trip - Be your own captain on the Danube

By e-bike to the Witti barge hire centre

You can hire a boat from the boat builder Witti in Freizell and get to know one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube valley. Between the Jochenstein and Aschach power stations, the famous "Schlögener Donauschlinge", numerous castles, ruins, beautiful gravel beaches, but also impressive, steep slopes and charming villages await you along a river length of approx. 35 km. Hire possible from 1 May to September, 09:00 to 18:30

Getting to the Zillenverleih: Starting from Aschach, cycle along the Danube cycle path south bank (stage 2) to Inzell and then take the Au-Inzell cross ferry and cross over to the north bank. From Au, continue on the Danube Cycle Path north bank (stage 1) to Freizell.

Duration: 1 hour 40 min.

Day trip to Haibach for herb fans

Permaculture Theklasia and herbal workshop

Thekla Raffezeder has created a paradise for herb lovers on her small mountain farm in Haibach ob der Donau. She cultivates her property according to the principles of permaculture and also organises active herb workshops as well as herb and hedgerow tours. She teaches how to collect, process and prepare herbs and sells various products such as balsams and fruit spreads. The workshops and guided tours only take place by prior appointment by telephone.

Getting there: by e-bike, the route starts in Aschach and passes through the villages of Hartkirchen, Hilkering and Steinwänd. From there, somewhat steeper serpentine roads lead up to the Stauf castle ruins, in the immediate vicinity of Thekla Raffezeder's mountain farm.
