Schopper and Fishing Museum

Aschach an der Donau, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather
  • Suitable for groups

Since 2004 Aschach an der Donau features a double museum, which is dedicated to the shipbuilding handcraft of “Schoppen” and fishery in Upper Austria.

A museum tour through the “Schoppermuseum” not only informs you about the social and economic circumstances of the “Schopper” workers based on original items, information panels and interviews with contemporary witnesses, but also gives you an impression about the wooden ships, which used to be built in Andorf, by using models. The name “Schopper” originates from the production method of “Schoppen”, which is the sealing of the ship, float or “Zille” planks by stuffing moss into the cracks.
The development and progress of fishery are also displayed in a very vivid way by impressive exhibits. Next to various fish preparations, whose habitat is the Danube, the museum shows various animals at the river’s shore. One of the main tasks of the Upper Austrian fishery association “OÖ. Landesfischereiverband” is to preserve and pass on the cultural heritage of fishery from generation to generation.
