Vichtenstein Castle - of feud and the bishop's victory
The romantic Vichtenstein Castle is located in the centre of Vichtenstein, just a few metres off the Donausteig trail. It was probably founded in the 11th century by one of the Counts of Formbach. After this dynasty died out in 1145, the castle passed to the Hallgraves of Wasserburg. In 1217, a reversal of fortune began that was to throw the region into turmoil for years! Konrad Count of Wasserburg and Vichtenstein wanted to go on a crusade to the Holy Land and borrowed money from the Prince-Bishop of Passau. As a pledge, he gave Vichtenstein Castle with its numerous possessions. Before his departure, Konrad married and signed the castle over to his wife. However, the Bishopric of Passau regarded the castle as her property and considered this transfer to be unlawful. Thus began an 8-year feud between Konrad and the bishopric. He harmed Passau wherever he could: he destroyed Passau property, attacked Passau merchants, blockaded the Danube, ... His strategic "masterpiece": as Passau's prosperity was based on the salt trade, Konrad channelled the salt from Salzburg past Passau! He utilised his salt trading privileges as Hallgraf and had the salt transported down the Inn River landed in Schärding. It was then transported overland via Münzkirchen, Vichtenstein and Kasten to Obernzell, from where it found its usual route to Bohemia. In doing so, he not only damaged Passau, but also made very good money himself! Konrad was finally excommunicated several times (!) for his actions and later even ostracised. In the end, however, he had to give in. In 1227, Vichtenstein became the property of the Bishopric of Passau for the next 550 years. Soon afterwards, the newly founded Engelszell Monastery was supported by being exempted from the Vichtenstein toll and also received all the storm-damaged trees of the Vichtenstein dominion in 1299. In later years, the castle was a favourite hunting lodge of the Passau bishops. The Jagabild chapel on the ridge of the Haugstein has some marvellous stories to tell about this time of hunting! Find out more under "Jagabild Chapel - a marvellous gem!". In 1803, the rule of the Bishopric of Passau ended through secularisation and Vichtenstein Castle fell to the Austrian state. From 1860 onwards, a period of eventful private ownership began. Today, the castle is owned and inhabited by the Schulz-Wulkow family.
The castle cannot be visited! (Source: Schulz-Wulkow, K. (2012). Vichtenstein in the Sauwald)
By the way: Castle mounds used to be kept free of woodland for military reasons. This also helped Linz's Pöstlingberg to become a popular vantage point after the Maximilian fortifications were abandoned. Today, the Pöstlingberg is the landmark of Linz and a must-see for every Donausteig hiker!

The Danube flows leisurely past the Aumüller family home in Obermühl. An old cider press standing outside gives an idea that the "national drink" of the Upper Austrians has a home within these walls. Erich Aumüller is one of those producers who have elevated cider from a simple thirst quencher for farmers working in the fields to the quality league of the absolute top beverages with inexhaustible passion and expertise. With inexhaustible passion and an uncompromising commitment to quality, he has catapulted himself into the ranks of the best cider producers in Upper Austria. Aumüller has been a member of the select ranks of "Mostsommeliers" since 2007. The family business has long been known for its top-quality musts and exquisite fruit juices, and the Aumüllers' pear musts in particular have repeatedly been among the state winners and the best musts in Austria. Erich Aumüller enjoys sharing his love of cider with guests. If you book in advance, he will show you around his "sanctuary" and present his top musts at tastings. But beware: once you have had a taste of the world of cider in a seminar with Erich Aumüller, you can easily become infected with the cider virus. Cure absolutely impossible.

It has become beautiful, probably the oldest inn in Linz. So beautiful, in fact, that passers-by strolling through the old town regularly and deliberately stop at the former "Goldener Anker" inn to take a curious look at the renovated parlour from the outside. The cool tiles have given way to a warm oak floor, and new life has been breathed into the kitchen and the inner courtyard. As far as possible, the charm of yesteryear, including the wood panelling in the parlour, has been retained and restored.
Christian and Simone Göttfried are two gastronomic professionals who have already spent a decade creating an epicurean meeting place for gourmets at the Schrot in Alkoven.
The result is impressive: A pearl in the heart of Linz.
Whether it's a holiday, a weekend or a short trip - you can relax with us. Just sit in the guest garden or in our cosy guest parlour and forget everyday life with good food and drink.
We look forward to seeing you!

The Kalvarienberg is the highest elevation in the municipality (562 m) with a chapel. From the Kalvarienberg you have a wonderful view at any time of year - from the Bohemian Forest to the Dachstein. Due to its location - not far from the village centre and close to the Donausteig trail - the Kalvarienberg is accessible on foot (also with prams/asphalt) all year round. From there you can also take a leisurely hike to the Stauf castle ruins.
The Calvary was consecrated as early as 1838, but the station chapels fell into disrepair towards the end of the 19th century. In 1938, the then parish priest Dr Waslmayr decided to renovate the Way of the Cross. He commissioned the Franciscan Father Herculan Baldauf to design the pictures and his confrere Father Philipp-Jakob Vergott to execute them. When Fr Philipp died unexpectedly, Fr Herkulan completed the paintings for the Stations of the Cross. But they were never put up again, probably due to the turmoil of the war and post-war period.
In 1973, Father Wundsam discovered the pictures and suggested that they be put up. In 1974, with many hours of voluntary labour, the Stations of the Cross were erected in a short space of time.
At the turn of the year 2013/2014, numerous helpers lent a helping hand and provided many hours of voluntary labour, material donations and financial support. The chapel now shines in new splendour once again.
From the newly designed rest area on the Calvary, you have a wonderful view from the Bohemian Forest to the Dachstein - at any time of year or day!
Tip: Every Saturday lunchtime there is an oven-fresh pork roast.

People associate good food with happiness, which is what I bring with my original Neapolitan-style pizzas. I pay attention to the highest quality and traditional ingredients, but also to regionality.
Demand is moving away from fast, cheap fast food and more and more towards experience gastronomy and experimental cuisine. This is reflected in my Neapolitan pizzas.
We pay particular attention to sustainability and will take big steps in this direction in the future. It is also important to us to offer meatless pizzas. The selection of vegetarian and vegan pizzas makes up almost half of our menu, so we can also make a small contribution to making the world a better place. We only expect the quality from our customers that we would expect ourselves!
Very centrally located, ideal for tour groups, also on Mondays by prior arrangement. Beautiful, quiet guest garden, hall for events.
You cycle along the Danube Cycle Path in the countryside, with the rolling hills of the Machland region in view, looking forward to your long-awaited break. Where better to spend it than surrounded by the aroma of baked bread, ripe fruit and a hint of fine brandy at Radlerbauernhof Moser in Mitterkirchen. More than just a rest stop, this place is a retreat full of warmth and hospitality, where the Moser family are living their dream. Andreas, once a glazier and now a brandy and cider sommelier, has created a place here with his wife Christine and their three children Michael, Theresa and Maximilian that not only impresses with its history, but also delights with its many products.
Every guest is welcomed with a warm smile, because that has always been a priority for the Moser family. Between tradition and innovation, the farm is now run by the eighth generation of Andreas and Christine - the quality of their products is still their top priority. All products are made in-house: from apple juice to fresh bread, from bacon to jam - nothing is bought here. This makes the farm an almost self-sufficient restaurant. The Radlerbauernhof's range also includes an impressive selection of high-quality brandies and liqueurs. In addition to classic varieties such as the Dirndl liqueur made from cornelian cherries, various fruit brandies such as apple, pear, plum and cider brandies, Andreas also likes to experiment with creative brandies such as cigar brandy, grape brandy at cask strength and the World Cup edition "Whisky meets apricot". One thing remains the same for all distillations: only the best, farm-grown fruit is used.
The Radlerbauernhof is located in Machland, a region that could not be better suited to fruit growing. The farm also strengthens its identity by working with regional confectioners and participating in local initiatives. For the Moser family, regionality means one thing above all: a matter close to their hearts.
Far more than just a stage destination for hikers along the Donausteig and the Teufelsweg or cyclists on routes such as the Donauradweg, the Alpenblick-Runde or the Radrunde Linz-Grein-Linz, the Radlerbauernhof Moser is a place that passes on the history of the region to guests. The farm invites you to savour its own delicacies, experience the art of distillation and get to know the warmth of the Moser family. Visitors can take part in guided tours of the show distillery and even taste the farm's own products. And if you really want to feel at home with the Moser's, stay overnight in one of the cosy farmhouse guest rooms.

Tradition schafft Lebensraum…

The Riverresort Donauschlinge is nestled in the impressive setting of the Donauschlinge Schlögen, where the Danube seems to pause with its 180-degree bend before continuing its powerful course. Here, in the midst of this beautiful backdrop, the couple Eva and Marc Hillebrandt run the resort with heart and dedication - a legacy that Eva's grandfather built up with care. Just as the Danube runs a loop, the Hillebrandts combine past and present in a special way. Anyone who arrives here immediately senses that the Riverresort is more than just a hotel.
A visit to the Riverresort conveys a feeling of grounding and stability, interspersed with a touch of adventure around the spectacular location on the Danube loop Schlögen. Here, an interplay of history and nature is offered that makes the older walls of the hotel and all the historical stories of the place tangible. Those who arrive here can slow down, take a deep breath and absorb the authenticity and tranquillity.
The Hillebrandt family is also particularly proud of their cuisine, which forms the heart of the hotel. Regional specialities are prepared here using fresh local ingredients. Freshly harvested vegetables or homemade pastries based on old family recipes - the culinary delights leave nothing to be desired. The menu even includes freshly caught trout from the family's own farm for the "Müllerin style trout" dish, which is particularly popular with guests. The Hillebrandt family succeeds in one thing above all: combining down-to-earth hospitality with local, fresh and regional cuisine. With its 100 rooms, large restaurant and terrace, which offer a direct view of the Danube flowing past and the hilly landscape, the hotel offers space for relaxation and enjoyment in equal measure. The wellness area is also an important part of the resort and provides the perfect retreat to unwind and recharge your batteries, especially in the colder months of the year. Eva and Marc also want to energise this part of their resort even more in the future, and so the tranquillity and power of the surrounding nature is to be integrated even more strongly through an expanded offer.
The location on the Danube is not only a visual highlight, but also a starting point for numerous activities. Whether mountain biking or cycling along the Donauschlingen Runde and the Donauradweg or hiking on stages of the Donausteig - the nature around the hotel opens up adventures for individual travellers, couples or families. There is also a playground next to the hotel for younger guests and exciting excursions around the resort to make your stay unforgettable. Whether as a day guest, for a weekend or a longer holiday - the Riverresort Donauschlinge offers the perfect setting at any time of year and for every age group.
Delicious ice cream variations and top coffee, in the guest garden - direct view of the Danube!
We use no chemical additives (gluten-free, no colouring, no fruit enhancer) for our approx. 30 varieties of Italian ice cream with fresh fruit.
The rest areas consist of an exposed concrete column, reminiscent of a Roman milestone, bearing a Roman head created by artist Miguel Horn and containing information about the local community, the Danube cycle path and the Romans, as well as a 5 metre long rest bench made of concrete and stone and a paved floor made of Danube pebbles. The architecture is based on design elements from Roman times.
The design for the Roman rest areas was the result of a competition organised jointly with the University of Art and Design Linz and won by student Lukas Beltrame. An important partner in the construction of the squares is the construction academy in Steyregg, which produced all the built-in parts for the squares with its apprentices.
The viewpoints are not simply "viewpoints", rather the "special" aspect of the vantage points is emphasised and enhanced by creative objects. Each place has that certain something, yet a continuity is recognisable, offering the viewer breathtaking perspectives from the Sauwald region on the charming landscapes opposite.
The initiators of the Sauwald Panorama Road are the Danube communities of Esternberg, Vichtenstein, Engelhartszell, St. Ägidi and Waldkirchen am Wesen. The road leads from Wesenufer to Pyrawang.
The fruit is pressed and gently heated in our modern facility.
The juice is then filled into an easy-to-use bag with a tap, the BAG in BOX system.
When the juice is extracted, the bag contracts so that no air flows in. This means that the opened juice can be kept for at least 8 weeks, or even 1 year if sealed, while maintaining the same quality and freshness. And without any chemical additives or preservatives.

The Speck-Alm - the name says it all. However, there is much more to Tanja and Michael Gaßner's farm than just a generational business focussing on pork. The smell of freshly baked wood-fired bread mingles with the clear Danube air every day, while the ringing of cowbells heralds the arrival of guests. It is living values, animal encounters and a daily endeavour to bring their guests closer to nature and the region that have characterised the Speck-Alm near the Wolfsschlucht gorge near Bad Kreuzen for 35 years.
There is only one accommodation on the Gaßner farm: the "Schweinehotel", where around 170 Swabian-Hallis and Edel-Land pigs are reared from fattening to slaughter. There are also cattle, Styrian pinto goats, wild fattened chickens, ducks and quails as well as domestic cats on the Speck-Alm. The farm clearly communicates what it is all about: regional enjoyment that makes the origin of its ingredients transparent. Pork, fresh meat, sausage and meat loaf are processed directly on the farm for the cider tavern, which has been in existence since 1989, and sold on site. Where does all the other food come from? Also from the immediate neighbourhood, of course! However, it is probably the vegetables and herbs that have travelled the shortest distance, as they are lovingly harvested by Tanja in her own vegetable patch and herb garden. In addition to potatoes and carrots, she now also grows cabbage sprouts, cabbage and sweetcorn. "The soil," say Tanja and Michael, "provides us all with a basis for life." They want to pass on their awareness of how food is produced to every guest who visits the farm. If you want to take home something more than just living values, you can visit the Speck-Alm's own farm shop and buy meat and sausage products or bacon and meat dumplings - which are made by hand on the farm.
As an example of sustainable agriculture and regional ties, the Gaßners and their team work every day to bring their guests closer to the diversity and quality of their products and to preserve the tradition of their farm. Everything that cannot be grown on the farm is sourced from small farms in the immediate vicinity.
However, the Speck-Alm not only offers culinary delights, but also plenty to experience! Visitors to the farm can experience farming up close, feed the animals and learn about the production processes and origins of our daily food. Excursions to the Speck-Alm are particularly popular with school classes. The Gaßner family tries to teach pupils about local agricultural products in a fun way. The farm is best reached via the Wolfsschlucht or the Kreuzner-Herzklopfen-Runde, which makes it a popular stopover for hikers in particular.

It was a sought-after meat, fur and medicine supplier. Protection measures and reintroductions led to the increase of the European beaver’s stock. Where man and beaver meet, conflicts can occur. Its tree chopping makes the beaver unpopular with the forestry sector, and marginal floodings can occur by the damming of waters. But beavers are an enrichment to our waters and contribute through their activities to an increase of faunal biodiversity.

Beautiful guest garden with a view of the Danube.
The inn (Wirtin 'z Atzersdorf) is located directly on the hiking trails (Donausteig, Donausteigrunde, ..........) and about 400 m away from the viewpoint/rest area 4/4-Blick.
Since Edith Wagner took over, the Wirtshaus Hofer has stood for traditional, home-style cooking, a rich selection of salads and lots of cosiness at the regulars' table.
We cook fresh and homemade food. Together we want to build on what the house is known for.
The new "Tilli" inn is located directly in the centre of Haibach ob der Donau.
120 seats and a guest garden (with playground for the little ones) invite you to linger and enjoy the traditional and regional cuisine.
Especially for family, Christmas and birthday celebrations, christenings, meetings and conferences, the guest room can be partitioned off so that approx. 35 people can celebrate or discuss undisturbed.
Since we attach great importance to the origin of the food in our inn, as well as to the cooperation with local producers, we obtain a large part of our products directly from the region:
The toque-awarded restaurant "Zum kleinen Griechen" celebrates its 42nd anniversary in 2024. An achievement that Renatá and Andreas Mair are proud of and that is closely linked to the appreciation of their guests. The medieval building that houses the restaurant is located in the centre of Linz's old town, close to the Salzamt and the Danube. In 1982, after extensive renovations, it was given its current appearance, whereby the historic vaulted ceiling was of course preserved and contributes to the cosy atmosphere. Renatá Mair started out as a self-taught chef over 30 years ago and discovered her passion for good food and imaginative combinations. She specialises in excellent fish dishes, but all her other dishes - preferably international and her own refined creations - are of the highest quality and are based on hand-picked products. She works with an appreciation of the ingredients, cooks with precision and adds delightful, flavourful Mediterranean accents. Whether it's lamb, Iberian pork, noble fish, langoustine, scampi & Co. - everything is freshly and thoughtfully prepared. There is always a seasonal menu to choose from, and vegetarians will be happy to put together a meat-free menu. Andreas Mair provides knowledgeable answers to questions about the excellent wine selection of around 400 wines. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Weinwirt Oberösterreich. In addition to the restaurant, there is also a small outdoor café. In the middle of the beautiful old town, you can enjoy both: exquisite food and the historic flair of Linz. As the little Greek restaurant enjoys unbroken popularity, it is essential to book in advance of your planned visit.
