Nature and Culture on the Lower Inn
Easy bike route on the Inn Cycle Path from the charming Baroque town of Schärding to the three-rivers city of Passau and back.
0 km Schärding. The highlight of the town is the colorful Silberzeile, where the color of each of these townhouses was assigned to a specific professional group. In addition to other urban gems and churches, there is also a city museum in Schärding (open from April to October).
1 km Neuhaus. From the Upper Town Square, head right to the Old Inn Bridge over to the German Neuhaus am Inn. Neuhaus Castle today houses a secondary school run by the English Ladies.
4 km Vornbach. After 4 km on the Inn Valley Cycle Path, you reach Vornbach. There, the church of the former Benedictine Abbey Maria Hilf (Rococo) with the nearby cemetery church St. Martin is especially worth seeing. At the height of the fire station hut, follow the cycle path again, which leads into the Neuburg Forest and to the Inn river breakthrough, the Vornbach Gorge.
7 km Neuburg. Above the forest towers the fortified five-towered complex Neuburg Castle. A paved road leads steeply up to it. Worth seeing there are the district gallery, the outer grounds, and the flower garden from the 17th century, as well as the panoramic view over the Inn Valley.
17 km Passau. The same steep road leads back down to the Inn Valley Cycle Path. On a natural path along the river, the route goes partially considerably uphill and downhill. On the Bavarian side near the Ingling power plant, you reach Passau. Via the university, you get to the old town.
The bike tour returns from the old town over the large Inn Bridge. After crossing the Inn, turn right over Jahnstraße to the Roman Museum Kastell Boiotro (open from March – 15 Nov daily 10 am–4 pm except Monday), through Severin Gate, past St. Severin's Church and cemetery to Austrian Ingling.
21 km Ingling. From Ingling, follow the road turning right ("Nature Experience Path European Reserve Lower Inn") and from there always in sight of the Inn toward Wernstein. Tip: Those wishing to cover part of the return by boat can board the "MS Schärding" of the Inn shipping captain Schaurecker in Ingling (Tue-Sat: 2:50 pm, additionally Sun and holidays at 12 noon) and enjoy the wild romantic Lower Inn Valley up to Schärding. Bicycle transport is free.
28 km Wernstein. In Wernstein, at the foot of the imposing opposite Neuburg Castle lies the more slender Wernstein Castle, now privately owned. In front of this castle stands a Marian column from 1647. The suspension bridge "Mariensteig" leads pedestrians and cyclists to the other Inn side to Neuburg.
34 km Schärding. Four kilometers after Wernstein, the signposting points right under the railway tracks. Then it goes right and immediately left again, directly along the Inn. After crossing the Pram Bridge, you soon reach the center of Schärding again.

According to the historian Lamprecht, the eleven pillars date back to the year 1310 when they were erected on granite blocks on the river banks.
The 1899 floods tore away the wooden construction.
After WWII, the 250m long bridge was rebuilt with an iron concrete construction.

An inn has been operating at this location since the early 18th century.
In 1984, we were able to acquire the former brewery pub "Egger" from the Baumgartner brewery
and have since rebuilt and extended it.
We have remained the "Wirtshaus" and offer excursion guests, cyclists, rowers and hikers hearty Haumann food, fine draught beer, golden yellow cider and bacon from the farmer and of course coffee and homemade cakes.
and of course coffee and homemade cakes as well as all the other usual drinks.
The other option is membership of the "Kultiwirten",
a co-operation of family businesses
with a special focus on genuine Austrian hospitality,
good cuisine as well as tradition, customs and regionality.
We want to give our hotel guests the feeling of living with the people in the countryside.
SEE. SMELL. TASTE. FEEL.
This is exactly what you can do in our entire restaurant.
Take a seat at one of the 24 seats in the restaurant area and enjoy the view of the open kitchen.
You are sure to experience an unforgettable evening at our chef's table - exclusively for 2 people only, it is located right next to the kitchen! Here you can sit slightly elevated next to each other and watch the chefs live as they prepare and serve the dishes, so to speak "enjoyment first row foot-free"!

Without a menu - but with a lot of feeling. You won't find a menu here. Instead, we enquire about intolerances and specialities when you make your reservation. We use this information and the seasonally available products to create your personal menu.
We cook what nature and the season have to offer. What we get from the region, we take from the region. However, we are not closed to influences from all over the world. Many of the herbs and plants we use for our dishes come from our own garden. We collect nettles, spruce tops and elder from secluded places in nature. If something is not available in the appropriate quality, there is an alternative. We refuse to use products that do not meet our quality standards The food is the star and is always our focus. Enjoyment can be that simple!
Of course, an excellent menu must be accompanied by finely coordinated drinks. But it doesn't always have to be wine. Our non-alcoholic beverage accompaniment is in no way inferior. In addition to our extensive range of wines, we also serve you non-alcoholic drinks that we have painstakingly crafted to accompany your meal.
Lukkas Kienbauer's gastronomic empire began in March 2016 when he opened his first restaurant, "Lukas Restaurant", on Unterer Stadtplatz in Schärding. Shortly afterwards, in summer 2018, the 4-toque chef expanded his culinary world with "Lukas Steak" on Oberer Stadtplatz and in spring 2021, the opening of his Japanese-inspired restaurant "Lukas Izakaya" was just around the corner. That's how quickly the Schärdinger had expanded his gastronomic world to 3 restaurants in his younger years.

The original Gothic palace burned down in 1724, but was rebuilt in the Baroque style 28 years lager. The church and righthand tract were added in 1900. The building is now used as a convent and school.
Pure gardening pleasure! The palace park is one of the four exhibition areas of the OÖ. Landesgartenschau "INNsGRÜN" 2025 in Schärding. The castle park enchants visitors with its historical elements, the fantastic view of the Inn and its harmonious atmosphere.
Until 1570, the gate that used to be called the Inn Gate or Customs Tower belonged to the Dukes of Bavaria. It then fell to the town before passing into private hands in 1819. The town side of the tower features a fresco depicting the bombardment of Schärding by Danish and Austrian troops during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703. The countless high-water marks meanwhile tell their own story of the town's numerous flood disasters. The balcony in the corner above the arch was originally used to pillory convicted criminals. It now houses a restaurant and a museum.
In the Baumgartner Brauerei Stüberl - affectionately known as the "Bums'n" - people don't just sit next to each other, but get together, share stories and laugh about anecdotes that have characterised the house for generations. The Bums'n is a place full of warmth, where life and community are celebrated. "Young and old come together here, the banker sits next to the labourer and the travelling troupe next to the employee," says Helmut Schuster with a smile - a real "living room" for the town and its visitors, because a feeling of home and togetherness is conveyed here. Once you enter the Bums'n, you become part of a living history made up of encounters, shared laughter and an appreciation of genuine, unadulterated cuisine.
The Bums'n has been a permanent fixture in Schärding for over a century. The listed building has a long history dating back to 1609, when Baumgartner beer was first brewed here. Helmut Schuster, who started as head waiter at the inn 21 years ago, took over the traditional business, which has been known as the "zur Bums'n" pub since 1946, together with his business partner Herbert Unger in 2013. The somewhat unusual name comes from a time when beer barrels were still delivered by carriage. They rolled over the sloping wooden floor of the pub and "banged" against the bar. These noises were memorised by the locals and this is how the pub got its unmistakable name, which still stands for it today. What else is unmistakable about the Bums'n? The aroma of roast meat in the Rein, warm Leberkäs with crispy Salzstangerl and the famous goulash that greets you as soon as you come near the inn - if you want to experience typical Innviertel cuisine, the Bums'n is the place to be! The Surrahmschnitzel in malt beer sauce and crisp, fresh salads round off the menu. The dishes reflect the love of hearty cuisine and make the restaurant a real culinary meeting place.
For the Bums'n team, regionality is paramount - many ingredients and products are sourced directly from the surrounding area. For Helmut and Herbert, the conscious decision to use regional products is not only a question of quality, but also an expression of their close connection to their homeland. The direct location of the inn in the baroque town, coupled with its proximity to the Inn and the loving preservation of old traditions, means that the connection to the Danube region can be felt in every corner of the house.
The rustic vaulted ceiling on the ground floor and the cosy guest garden invite you to relax with a cool Baumgartner beer after a hike or a cycle tour along the many cycle paths, such as the Inn-Donau-Runde or the Pram-Sauwald-Tour, to relax. The Inn Cycle Path, which leads directly through Schärding, also offers a wonderful route before a stop at the inn. Once you have visited the Bums'n, you will always want to come back - whether for the food, the get-together or simply to enjoy a good beer.
