Donausteig – simply fantastic! On this stage we experience the wonderful Eferdinger Basin from various perspectives. From Aschach on the Danube, we hike in large meanders through the cultivated plain, over the wooded ridge on the western edge, back to the Danube, and finally to Eferding in the center of the basin. The starting point for this Donausteig stage is Aschach. The historic Danube market lies at the transition from the wooded Danube gorge to the fertile plain of the Eferdinger Basin. The picturesque town center enchants with its marketplace open towards the Danube and richly decorated bourgeois houses. Both tell of prosperity as a trading hub on the Danube. A wonderful start to the experience! We start at the magnificent riverbank and initially follow the Danube downstream. Then the Donausteig leaves the mighty river and turns into the cultivated plain of the Eferdinger Basin. On small farm roads and field paths, we now head towards the ridge of hills on the western edge of the fertile plain. The atmospheric rural cultural landscape fascinates: fertile fields, large quadrangular farms, old wayside shrines, and the characteristic vegetable cultivation for which the Eferdinger Basin is widely known. From the foot of the hill ridge, a steep forest path quickly leads us higher and soon we stand at the Schaunberg castle ruin, the highlight of this stage! Once the largest castle in Upper Austria, it tells of the legendary land of the Schaunbergs. From its spectacular bergfried (keep), the Eferdinger Basin unfolds in all its splendor: the Danube river with its floodplain forests, a mosaic of fertile fields, scattered hamlets, ... one of the legendary view points of the Donausteig! Now begins a wooded high-altitude hike along the ridge. Nearly at the same altitude, cozy forest paths and the last part, a farm road, take us to the wonderful Landerl Chapel, an unexpected gem. Congratulations – here we stand at the highest point of this Donausteig stage! Hidden views deep through the foreground forest into the Eferdinger Basin evoke a "mountain" atmosphere. Next, a steep forest path leads us back down into the plain of the Eferdinger Basin. Then we walk through lush vegetable fields out into the plain to Pupping. In the rural village, we discover the next highlight: the small monastery church, the death place of St. Wolfgang! Over farm roads and field paths, we reach Brandstatt on the Danube, following a section of the Aschach. At the sight of the mighty river, it quickly becomes clear that here we stand before the once many-armed creator of this wonderful landscape basin. The last section leads over farm roads and field paths through the varied cultural landscape to the center of the Eferdinger Basin, to Eferding. The town is the third oldest in Austria and a crowning conclusion to this stage. Donausteig – simply an experience!

Directions:From the Donausteig starting point "Aschach", we follow the Danube bank trail downstream under the bridge until the Donausteig turns right after the large silo facilities. Shortly after, we reach a crossroads. From here, a short detour (approx. 350 m) to the right leads to Aschach Castle. However, the Donausteig continues to the left. After a sharp right turn, we turn left and cross the rural settlement Deinham. Immediately before the Hartkirchen war cemetery, turn right. A farm road now leads straight through the fields. At the T-junction after the railway tracks, turn left. Along the paved road, we cross the railway tracks again and hike through the rural village of Karling. Here, we cross the Aschach river. At the intersection with the main road, continue left. After approx. 400 m, the Donausteig turns right over the railway tracks. Now a field path runs straight through the farmland. Past the airfield, a steep forest path begins uphill to the Schaunberg castle ruin. Just before the castle ruins, we reach a paved road. Turn left uphill here. A few meters further, the castle access road branches off left downhill – this leads us in a short detour to the Schaunberg castle ruins. However, the Donausteig continues uphill on the road. From the large parking lot, turn left down the paved road to some houses. Then we walk almost level on idyllic forest paths and finally on a small farm road to the crossroads in sight of the Landerl Chapel. From here, turn right uphill to reach the Landerl Chapel by a short detour. The onward path, however, leads left downhill. After a short field path, a steep forest path brings us back down into the plain of the Eferdinger Basin. There we first follow the edge of the forest to the left, then a farm track through the fields to the right. Over the railway tracks, we reach the rural village of Pupping and the Nibelungenstraße. Turn left here and pass the monastery church of Pupping to the Donausteig starting point "Pupping". Here turn right and follow the farm road to the bridge, then continue left to the next bridge. Now we hike along the south bank of the Aschach river – initially on a field path, later on a farm road. At the bridge, we finally cross the Aschach and reach the main road. Turn right over the next bridge. Immediately after, a right loop leads back under this bridge and we stand at the Danube in Brandstatt. A short distance downstream is the Donausteig starting point "Brandstatt" (next to the ship docking station). From here, in a slight right curve, continue to the main road and follow this towards Eferding until an asphalt road branches off to the right. Continue right to the next intersection. Then turn left twice. Now a farm road passes some houses and turns into a field path after an intersection. In Waschpoint, we reach a settlement area again. Keep left here until a side arm of the Aschach is reached. Cross the river, then continue left to the main road, which brings us right to the large intersection with the Nibelungenstraße in Eferding. On the main road, continue about 100 m south, then turn left to the town parish church. At the church square, continue straight ahead and immediately before Starhemberg Castle, follow the footpath in a right curve to the north end of the town square. Turn left downhill there. After about 100 m, a footpath branches off to the right – this takes us through a long park to the Donausteig starting point "Eferding".

Steinige Behausungen…
Ruinen, einst wichtige Bauwerke für den Menschen, werden heute oft von anderen Bewohnern besiedelt. Der Wald holt sich die Hänge der ehemaligen Burgen zurück. Früher wurden sie freige halten, um eine freie Sicht zu gewährleisten. Sträucher und Kräuter nutzen jede freie Ritze. So manche Pflanze zeugt von der früheren Nutzung des Geländes. So kann man oft bei ehemaligen Siedlungen, selbst wenn keine Bauten mehr vorhanden sind, das kleine Immergrün (Vinca minor) finden, das in seiner Verbreitung auf den Menschen angewiesen ist. Schon im Mittelalter wurde sie als Zier- und Heilpflanze angesetzt. Auch für eine Vielzahl von Tieren bietet eine Burgruine Lebensraum. Turmfalken, Reptilien und selbst der Felsenbrüter Uhu können die vom Menschen geschaffenen Habitate nutzen.
Der junge Schaunberger Wolfgang heiratete, ohne Erlaubnis seines Vaters, eine Müllerstochter - wohin der Zorn des Vaters das junge Ehepaar trieb, weiß die Donau-Sage "Die unselige Hochzeit!".
This Castle is home to Starhemberg’s Princely Family Museum and to the Municipal Museum of Eferding, and is dubbed a "showcase of world history".

Chronik
Es wird vermutet, dass es bereits zu Zeiten der Kelten Siedlungen auf Aschacher Boden gab. Der Ort wird 777 bei der Gründung des Stiftes Kremsmünster in Zusammenhang mit dem Weinbau erstmals urkundlich erwähnt undentwickelt sich in der Folge zu einem bedeutenden Weinanbaugebiet.
Als Mautplatz erlangt Aschach in der Zeit von 1198 – 1775 große Bedeutung. Im Jahre 1512 verleiht Kaiser Maximilian I. dem Markt das Wappen mit den zwei Weinreben, womit auch die seit dem 13 Jhdt. bestehenden Marktprivilegien bestätigt werden.
Im 19. Jhdt. entwickelt sich Aschach zu einem der bedeutendsten Schiffsbauorte an der Donau.
Die Donaubrücke wurde 1962, das Donau-Kraftwerk 1963 eröffnet.

Über 1000 Jahre Donauort
Die liebenswerte Donaugemeinde Pupping bietet sowohl dem Erholungssuchenden, als auch dem Kulturinteressierten zahlreiche Möglichkeiten. Der Ort ist geprägt von wunderschön restaurierten, typisch oberösterreichischen Vierkanthöfen und von der Klosterkirche Pupping. Weit über die Grenzen der Region bekannt sind die Gastronomiebetriebe von Pupping, die die Atmosphäre echter Landgasthöfe bieten und Qualitätsprodukte aus der heimischen Landwirtschaft und Fischerei verarbeiten.
Donauradweg
Ein attraktives Teilstück des beliebten Donauradweges von Passau über Linz nach Wien führt durch das Gemeindegebiet Pupping. Viele Radler machen auf diesem Weg in Brandstatt Rast. Aber auch abseits des Donauradweges gibt es für Radfahrer zahlreiche einladende Strecken. Ein Paradies für Radler, die die Schönheiten der Natur zu schätzen wissen!
Das Aschacher Becken ist heute eine fruchtbare Ebene. Ein "Fruchtbarer Traum" des Fräuleins auf Schloss Ottensheim war dafür angeblich ausschlaggebend.

Eferding historisch
Uralter Siedlungsraum, zahlreiche Bodenfunde (Jungsteinzeit).

um 600 Beginn der bayerischen Landnahme (Eferding ist ein echter –ing Name)
um 1000 Eferding wird in der lateinischen „Nibelungias“ des Bischofs Pilgrim als einziger Ort zwischen Passau und Enns genannt.
1067-1367 Eferding unter der Herrschaft der Passauer Bischöfe.
1222 Stadtrechtsurkunde. Eferding ist drittälteste Stadt Österreichs. Die kräftige Förderung durch die Bischöfe von Passau bewirkt den raschen Aufschwung vom Dorf zum Markt und zur Stadt innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts.
1367-1559 Eferding unter der Herrschaft der Grafen von Schaunberg. Erwerb der Stadt durch Kauf. Das damals mächtigste Adelsgeschlecht des Landes ob der Enns macht Eferding zum politischen und wirtschaftlichen Mittelpunkt seines Territoriums. In 200 Jahren Schaunberger Herrschaft Aufstieg zur Residenzstadt und zu wirtschaftlicher Blüte.
1451-1505 Bau der Stadtpfarrkirche. Bauherren sind die Grafen von Schaunberg, den Großteil der Baukosten tragen aber die Bewohner der Stadt.
1559-1848 Die Starhemberger (ab 1643 Grafen, ab 1765 Fürsten) bleiben mit einer Unterbrechung von 1630 bis 1660 Herren von Eferding. Am Beginn ihrer Zeit wilde religiöse, wirtschaftliche und politische Wirren. Ausbreitung des Protestantismus, bayerische Pfandherrschaft, Bauernaufstände, Gegenreformation, Niedergang der Stadt. Eferding nicht mehr Herrschaftsmittelpunkt. Kraftvolle Persönlichkeiten unter den Starhembergern steigen zu höchsten Staatsämtern auf, bleiben weiter mit Eferding verbunden und fördern die Stadt.
1848 Eferding wird freie Gemeinde.
Tipp
Cafés und Gasthäuser, vielfältige Einkaufsmöglichkeiten (Lebensmittel, Sportgeschäfte usw.) in der Innenstadt. Schloss Starhemberg mit Heimatmusem der Stadt Eferding und Starhemberg’schen Familienmuseum.
Eferding ist schon lange freie Gemeinde - wie es dazu kam, ist in dem spannenden Schwank mit dem Titel "Vom Wilden Mann" nachzulesen.

Klosterkirche und Kloster
Das wichtigste Kulturdenkmal Puppings ist die Klosterkirche der Franziskaner. Die erste nachweisliche Erwähnung des Namens Pupping geht auf das Jahr 994 zurück. Am 31. Oktober verstarb nämlich der hl. Wolfgang (Bischof von Regensburg) in der St.-Othmar-Kapelle zu Pupping. Diese Othmarkapelle wird jedoch auf einer Tafel an der Westfassade der Klosterkirche bereits mit der Jahreszahl 866 erwähnt. Im 15. Jahrhundert wurde das Puppinger Kirchlein von den Grafen von Schaunberg, die ihren Sitz auf der nahgelegenen Schaunburg hatten, zur Begräbnisstätte gewählt. 1476 ließen sie das Franziskanerkloster erbauen. Unter Kaiser Joseph II. wurde 1786 das Kloster aufgehoben. 1801 wurden Kloster und Kirche abgetragen. Im Jahre 1874 wurde durch den damaligen Linzer Bischof Rudigier der Grundstein für den Neubau der Kirche gelegt, anschließend begann man auf den ehemaligen Grundmauern mit der Wiedererrichtung des Klosters.

Im Klostergarten erholt man sich bei den neu entstehenden Wegen der Besinnung.
Das Kloster Pupping wiurde zu Ehren des Hl. Wolfgangs errichtet, der als "Ein Heiliger, der zupackt" galt. Die Donau-Sage berichtet mehr von seinem Leben und Wirken.

The starting point of this stage is located at the beginning of the town center opposite the parish church (GPS: A‑4082 Aschach an der Donau, Kirchenplatz).
Public Transit
Aschach can be reached by bus. A return transfer from Eferding is also possible by bus. Information about the timetables can be found at http://www.ooevv.at .
Parking
The town center of Aschach has a short-term parking zone. A large parking lot where you can park free of charge and without time limit is located on the access road to the town center about 180 m north of the Danube bridge on the left side (near Bäckerei Einfalt; about 5 minutes walk to the church).
