SPIRITUAL HIKING AT THE DONAUSTEIG:

BAD MÜHLACKEN
We meet the Sisters of St. Mary of Carmel, who run the traditional Kneipp spa, once again on the Donausteig. They are people who dedicate their lives to following Jesus.

The dynamic of withdrawing and engaging from a listening heart guides them. True to the motto “Let the soul breathe,” they offer therapies to restore balance to life and experience a renewed sense of vitality.

Their motto is to revitalize the body, calm the mind, and nourish the soul. In doing so, they draw on their spirituality and the five pillars of Sebastian Kneipp’s health philosophy, thereby shaping the concept of a “holistic health retreat.”

Guests have the opportunity to participate in monastic life:
“Time out for yourself, letting go, and recharging your batteries”

As I hike the Castle Loop, I connect with the life within me, letting the mighty Danube, the refreshing swimming lakes of Feldkirchen, the babbling brook in the Pesenbach Valley, quiet forest trails, lush meadows, and the monastery herb garden in Bad Mühlacken wash over me.

Directions:
From the starting point in Oberlandshaag, we hike to Unterlandshaag, passing under the Danube Bridge (turn right at the bike information sign) and walking past small settlements. Continue straight ahead, and at the last farmhouse, we turn left. Following the dirt road past Bergheim Castle (note: school in session; can only be viewed from the outside), we arrive in the center of Feldkirchen.

We cross through the town, and before reaching the Danube, we turn left toward Feldkirchen’s swimming lakes, which feature a diving platform, a wakeboard and water ski lift, and the Motorikpark. After passing the lake with the water ski lift, we turn left and leave the lake area behind us. We keep to the right, passing the golf club, and after another lake, turn left toward Mühldorf. From Mühldorf Castle, we hike to Pesenbach (Pesenbach Castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside), cross the federal highway, and turn left toward Bad Mühllacken. In Bad Mühllacken, we enter the Pesenbach Valley Nature Reserve and climb the Prälatensteig trail, passing the Faustschlössl (hotel and restaurant), back to the starting point.

Tip:

  • The Kerzenstein is located in the wild, romantic, and legendary Pesenbach Valley and is the landmark of the nature reserve.
You’ll find adventure and action around the four swimming lakes in Feldkirchen.
