The famous natural wonder "Schlögener Schlinge" is the starting point of this Donausteig stage. The Danube bend is deeply embedded in the long breakthrough stretch of the upper Danube valley and changes its flow direction almost twice by 180° within a few kilometers - simply amazing! From Schlögen on the Danube, we hike along stations of the nature trail "Ciconia" through the steep hillside forest of the Danube slopes up to the "Schlögener Blick". This viewing platform opens up the famous view of the Danube bend – simply magnificent! Only here does the fascination and uniqueness of this natural spectacle become fully aware. It is no wonder that this view has become the main viewpoint of the entire Donausteig. Continuing uphill through the hillside forest, we soon reach the atmospheric high plateau of the Sauwald. Now a rolling cultural landscape shapes the scenery: vast forests, lush meadows, well-kept fields, beautiful hedges, scattered farmsteads... pure Sauwald idyll! Via field paths and farm roads, we hike in a relaxed up and down to Haibach, the home community of the farmer leader Christoph Zeller. A short detour to the rural parish church is worthwhile! The Donausteig turns here shortly before the town center and leads back down into the forested Danube slopes. On wonderful forest paths, later on a forest road, we follow the mighty river high above the Danube. Hidden deep views into the Danube gorge remind us of this natural oasis in the surrounding cultural landscape. At a Danube bend, we again reach the Sauwald high plateau. Now begins a long, pleasurable high-level hike. On a hill ridge, we hike gently up and down through the rural cultural landscape of the Sauwald. Hidden wide views open up to the Alps. Initially over wonderful meadow paths, then frequently over paved farm roads, we finally reach the last hill near Dorf - a true viewing balcony! Here the entire Eferding basin lies at our feet, and above it, the majestic Alpine giants rise on the horizon – simply wonderful! Now begins the long, panoramic descent into the Eferding basin. Over paved farm roads, occasionally also over field paths, we hike down through a beautiful rural cultural landscape to Aschach on the Danube, the crowning conclusion of this stage. A landscape experience of a special kind!

Directions:From the Donausteig starting point "Schlögen" we walk a few meters toward the Danube at the parking lot, then a gravel driveway leads uphill on the right, which shortly afterwards plunges into the steep hillside forest. High up in the Danube slopes, a hiking trail finally turns sharply right to the Donausteig rest area "Schlögener Blick". From there we reach in a left curve over a ridge to the Red Cross at the edge of the hillside forest. Now begins the rolling cultural landscape of the Sauwald high plateau. The left driveway leads through a short forest section to a crossroads (Ciconia panel "Hedges and tree rows ...") shortly before Linetshub. Over the right meadow path, it goes on here to an asphalt road, which we then follow to the right to the next intersection (Wohlfahrtnerhof). There shortly left and then immediately right again. The asphalt road quickly becomes a field path. Initially over meadows, later through forest, we hike down to the Fuchsbach, cross it, and walk uphill again on the opposite slope. At the birch with bench on the right. In a left curve, we reach the Roman road (asphalt road), which takes us right to the municipal depot (on the left side) in Haibach. From here, we reach the parish church, the town center of Haibach, straight ahead. The Donausteig runs through the community. After the town center, we turn right at the fork and after about 130 m turn left onto Reith. After about 450 m, a field path branches off to the right, from which we later turn left onto Hinterberg. Here we go straight ahead to the district road, on which we remain for 250 m. Turning left leads a path into the forest and down from the Danube slopes. On the asphalt road "Haibach-Haizing" left, past the farm until after about 300 m a field path branches off to the left. Soon we hike gently up and down over meadow paths along the edge of the forest. At a farmstead, we come across a cart track that leads us through a short forest section to Hinteraigen. There, cross the intersection straight ahead. Now the asphalt road leads uphill. After a farm and a short forest section, there is a larger intersection on the ridge. From here, a short detour to the left takes us to the chapel of Dorf. However, the Donausteig turns right and leads to our last hill. From there, follow the asphalt road for about 2 km straight downhill, past the most tavern Arthofer Gut and the fire station Oed in Bergen. At the last farm before the forest, continue downhill to the right on the gravel road. After a forest section (high-voltage line), we reach an asphalt road in a forest clearing. Turn left here. Again through the forest, turn right at the next intersection. A side road now leads through Vornholz, past the inn Fadingerstüberl, to Kellnering, where we turn left. With a right curve, the road bypasses two houses (swimming pool) and then leads straight uphill. At the end of the following right curve, we go straight on the hollow path. At first slightly uphill, we reach over meadows, fields, and a short forest section the asphalt road "Am Kobl". Turn right downhill there. At the next intersection, continue right and finally, at the next opportunity (Brunnengasse), turn left down to the Danube promenade. Now we stand in the center of Aschach. From here, we come right along the Danube to the Donausteig starting point "Aschach".

The Kalvarienberg is the highest elevation in the municipality (562 m) with a chapel. From the Kalvarienberg you have a wonderful view at any time of year - from the Bohemian Forest to the Dachstein. Due to its location - not far from the village centre and close to the Donausteig trail - the Kalvarienberg is accessible on foot (also with prams/asphalt) all year round. From there you can also take a leisurely hike to the Stauf castle ruins.
The Calvary was consecrated as early as 1838, but the station chapels fell into disrepair towards the end of the 19th century. In 1938, the then parish priest Dr Waslmayr decided to renovate the Way of the Cross. He commissioned the Franciscan Father Herculan Baldauf to design the pictures and his confrere Father Philipp-Jakob Vergott to execute them. When Fr Philipp died unexpectedly, Fr Herkulan completed the paintings for the Stations of the Cross. But they were never put up again, probably due to the turmoil of the war and post-war period.
In 1973, Father Wundsam discovered the pictures and suggested that they be put up. In 1974, with many hours of voluntary labour, the Stations of the Cross were erected in a short space of time.
At the turn of the year 2013/2014, numerous helpers lent a helping hand and provided many hours of voluntary labour, material donations and financial support. The chapel now shines in new splendour once again.
From the newly designed rest area on the Calvary, you have a wonderful view from the Bohemian Forest to the Dachstein - at any time of year or day!

Gezähmter Fluss...
Bei Aschach erreicht die Donau nach ihrem Weg durch die Schlucht das Eferdinger Becken. Ursprünglich war die Donau ein Fluss mit vielen, weit reichenden Verzweigungen. Heute ist sie durch Regulierungen und Kraftwerksbau in ein enges Bett gezwängt, begrenzt von Uferbegleitdämmen. Die typischen Schotterinseln und Flachwasserzonen fehlen. Renaturierungsprojekte sollen hier Abhilfe schaffen und diese wertvollen Lebensräume wiederherstellen. Von Bedeutung sind auch naturnahe Stillgewässer, die in Form von Altarmen, Weihern und Tümpeln als Reste der ehemaligen Donaulandschaft zurückgeblieben sind. Teilweise beherbergen sie seltene Pflanzenarten wie z.B. die Wasserfeder.
In Aschach geschah es, dass der berühmt-berüchtigte Dr. Johann Faust, der ja bekanntlich seine Seele dem Teufel verschrieben hatte, den Leibhaftigen etwas zu sehr reizte. Was dann mit Dr. Faust geschah, lesen Sie in der Donau-Sage "Zum Teufel mit Dr. Faust".

Steinige Lebensräume…
Felsformationen stellen besonders wertvolle und typische Elemente im Donautal dar. Sie sind mit ihren Felsrasen und ihrer Felsspaltenvegetation naturraumprägend und ästhetisch. Doch damit nicht genug, sie sind wichtiger Lebensraum für viele bedrohte Tier- und Pflanzenarten. Wie Blockhalden, weisen exponierte Felsköpfe ein einzigartiges Klima auf, was sich in der hohen Vielfalt von Fauna und Flora widerspiegelt. Besonders zu erwähnen sind die hier vorkommenden Insekten, Reptilien, Amphibien und Flechten. Die vielen Burgen und Ruinen im Donautal erfüllen eine ähnliche Funktion, da sie, obwohl von Menschenhand gebaut, oft geeignete Lebensräume darstellen.
In den Wäldern im Donautal lebt ein ganz besonderer Zwerg - was passiert, wenn dieser schlecht aufgelegt ist, verrät die Donau-Sage "Vom Haselmandl".

A guates Tröpferl...
Das Donautal hat ein äußerst ästhetisches Erscheinungsbild, das seinen Höhepunkt wohl hier in der Schlögener Schlinge findet. Hier zeigt sich die Kraft und Schönheit der Natur. Gewässer sind seit jeher für den Menschen von Bedeutung gewesen. Durch die Schifffahrt kam und kommt auch heute noch der Donau eine wichtige Rolle zu. Eine weniger bekannte Nutzung im Donautal ist der Anbau von Wein. Zwischen 1000 und 1300 n. Chr., in der mittelalterlichen Wärmezeit, wurde in den Durchbruchstälern und in den niederen Lagen Oberösterreichs Wein angebaut. Auf der Höhe von Inzell, am linken Hang des Donautales gab es eine kleinräumige Weinanlage mit Mauern und Treppenverbindungen. Heute ist sie komplett mit Gebüsch überwuchert. In Hilkering, nahe Aschach wird aktuell wieder Wein angebaut.
Hoch oben, inmitten der Schlögener Schlinge thront das sogenannte Kerschbaumer Schlössl - wie es zu seinem Namen kam, und was "Der verfluchte Kirschenkern" damit zu tun hatte, erfahren Sie in der gleichnamigen Donau-Sage.
Das Donautal hat ein äußerst ästhetisches Erscheinungsbild, das seinen Höhepunkt wohl hier in der Donauschlinge Schlögen findet. Hier zeigt sich die Kraft und Schönheit der Natur.
Die Donauschlinge Schlögen wurde 2008 zum „Naturwunder Oberösterreich´s“ ernannt. Diese – epigenetische Durchbruchstal genannt – Rarität ist entstanden, als sich die Donau in den weichen Schichten des Tertiär ihr mäanderförmiges Bett suchte und dieses später auf dem harten Granitgestein beibehalten musste. Durch die nachfolgende Hebung der Landmasse grub sich die Donau fast 300 m tief ein und schuf auf diese Weise das Engtal, welches in der Schlögener Donauschlinge nahezu einen vollen Kreis bildet.

Chronik
Es wird vermutet, dass es bereits zu Zeiten der Kelten Siedlungen auf Aschacher Boden gab. Der Ort wird 777 bei der Gründung des Stiftes Kremsmünster in Zusammenhang mit dem Weinbau erstmals urkundlich erwähnt undentwickelt sich in der Folge zu einem bedeutenden Weinanbaugebiet.
Als Mautplatz erlangt Aschach in der Zeit von 1198 – 1775 große Bedeutung. Im Jahre 1512 verleiht Kaiser Maximilian I. dem Markt das Wappen mit den zwei Weinreben, womit auch die seit dem 13 Jhdt. bestehenden Marktprivilegien bestätigt werden.
Im 19. Jhdt. entwickelt sich Aschach zu einem der bedeutendsten Schiffsbauorte an der Donau.
Die Donaubrücke wurde 1962, das Donau-Kraftwerk 1963 eröffnet.

Tipp
Die Burgruine Stauf ist in 1 ½ Std. Gehzeit erreichbar. Vom begehbaren Bergfried hat man einen wunderbaren Ausblick in das darunterliegende Eferdinger Becken. Der Wanderweg beginnt direkt vor dem Gemeindeamt und ist mit gelben Hinweistafeln ausreichend beschildert.
Tipp
Zum höchsten Aussichtspunkt im Gemeindegebiet (563 m) führt der Kalvarienbergweg. In 30 Min. Gehzeit erreicht man die Kalvarienberg-Kapelle. Hier hat man bei guter Fernsicht einen Blick vom Mühlviertel bis zum Dachsteinmassiv.
Der Haibacher Christoph Zeller war einst neben Stefan Fadinger großer Bauernführer. Seine und weitere Geschichten werden in der Donau-Sage "Im Bauernkrieg" erzählt.
