Stillensteinklamm

Grein, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The Stillensteinklamm is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the Danube region of Upper Austria. Between Grein and St. Nikola an der Donau, the Gießenbach stream has carved a wild and romantic gorge into the granite over the course of millennia.

Roaring waterfalls, small cascades, imposing rock formations, and wooden trails make the hike through the Stillensteinklamm a special experience for nature lovers and hikers alike.

Your hike begins at the hiking information point in Grein, across from the boat landing. The well-marked family hiking trail leads through the small Danube town of Grein. Passing the Granite Gallery, petroglyphs (pictorial and graphic representations carved into stone) accompany you all the way to the gorge entrance.

Halfway to the gorge entrance, you’ll reach the Werfensteinblick viewpoint, offering a magnificent view of the Danube Valley and Wörth Island. Gorge entrance at the Gießenbachmühle. The gorge entrance at the Gießenbachmühle (3 km downstream from Grein) is also accessible by car via the B3. Parking, public restrooms, a snack bar, and a tourist information office are available at the gorge entrance.

As you head deeper into the valley, the first granite boulders signal the start of the Stillensteinklamm. The path leads upward via steps, with small waterfalls and cascades delighting the eye. Then, suddenly, it grows quiet: a massive overhanging rock forms a roof over the “Steinerne Stube,” and the stream is hidden deep beneath the boulders—hence the name “Stiller Stein.” A little further up, the water gurgles back to the surface, and it’s worth following it to a small reservoir. You leave the gorge and follow a forest path to the Aumühle Inn. Hiking Trail No. 7 leads you through the gentle rolling hills of the Mühlviertel back to the little Danube town of Grein.
