SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:
The St. Agatha, (225/250) “the good and kind,” lived in Sicily and advocated for Christianization. Patron saint of shepherdesses, bell and bell founders, and goldsmiths. In some areas it is customary on February 5th, her feast day, to bless the grain left for bread until the next harvest.
The “It must be – Trail” leads uphill and downhill, sometimes narrow and sometimes wider, offering splendid views of the Danube and the Schlögen bend, passing through meadows and by fertile fields.
On this circular route, I observe the nature of the paths and reflect on what paths in various forms mean for my life:

St. Agatha is the home municipality of the Upper Austrian peasant war leader Stefan Fadinger. Here you can view the Stefan Fadinger Monument and the Stefan Fadinger Museum.
Directions:From the church square, we walk along the main street and turn right into Schulweg. Past the secondary school, the route continues on a field path. We keep heading north and reach Etzing, where there is also a Donausteig rest area. After Etzing, we turn right and walk down towards the Danube. At the last farm, we leave the road and first go over a field path, then through the forest down to Schlögen. Passing the Hotel Donauschlinge, we walk up to the Schlögener Viewpoint and then follow the Ciconia Path for a short stretch. Up to Haibach, we follow the Donausteig route. In the Danube slopes, we turn towards Wiesing and cross the Nibelungen federal road after a descent. On the other side, we ascend past a ski slope again. We follow the hiking trail but do not go to the Stauff ruin, instead turning right before it. At Dunzing, we leave the forest and then walk again through the cultural landscape. We pass the Fadinger monument and two inns before returning to St. Agatha.

Wertvolle Kulturlandschaft…
Das Wechselspiel von naturnahen Bächen, Tobeln, Waldungen, landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen und Siedlungen sorgt für ein recht harmonisches Landschaftsbild im Sauwald. Die Hochlagen sind wichtige direkte Sichtverbindungen zu angrenzenden Landschaften wie dem Mühlviertel oder dem Donautal. Der Kulturlandschaftscharakter wird durch Dörfer, Weiler und Einzelgehöfte, kleine Hügel und Senken sowie große und kleine Bacheinschnitte geprägt. Diese Besonderheit des Sauwaldes gilt es zu erhalten – etwa die Sicherung und Entwicklung von Strukturelementen wie Feldgehölzen, Einzelbäumen, Hecken, Hohlwegen, Lesesteinhaufen und Wällen. Sie erfreuen nicht nur unser Auge, sondern sind wichtige Lebensräume für eine Vielzahl von Pflanzen und Tieren.
Der Schnaps - weithin bekannt als echtes Teufelszeug - geht angeblich wirklich auf den Leibhaftigen zurück. In "Der Teufel braut Schnaps" wird von der Enstehung des hochprozentigen Trunkes erzählt.

Tipps
Der Aussichtspunkt „Schlögener Blick“, das Naturwunder Oberösterreichs, liegt direkt am Donausteig und ist in 30 min. von Schlögen aus erreichbar.Ein weiterer lohnender Aussichtspunkt im Donautal ist der „Steiner Felsen“. Dieser liegt direkt am CICONIA-Weg und ist von Schlögen aus in ca. 2 Stunden erreichbar.
In eisigen Raunächten kann es sein, dass man in Schlögen schaurige Klagestimmen vernimmt - es wird erzählt von Raubrittern, die auf Burg Schlögen ihr Unwesen trieben und von jener Nacht, wo seither "Nur das Heulen bleibt".
