Grein city walk - discover art and culture. The Danube town of Grein is still called the "Pearl of the Strudengau", not least because of its special location directly on the historic Danube, nestled in the gentle Mühlviertel hill landscape. Get to know the history of Grein and its numerous sights on a leisurely stroll along the Danube and through the town center.
At the planet path directly at the starting point of the Grein city walk, you get closer to the solar system. The idea and execution come from the Grein physicist Dr. Werner Riegler, who presents the vastness and size of the Milky Way within reach for astronomy enthusiasts. Continue towards the mouth of the Greinbach, where there is a historic photo panel showing old photos of the Grein Danube shore around 1920. Past the bridge saint Nepomuk, proceed towards the steps that lead to the Kalvarienberg chapel. A short detour here is worthwhile, offering a magnificent view over Grein and convincing with the Gallery in Granite. Back on the main street towards the town center, go to the historic town square. The old town hall with city theatre, the Meggaubrunnen fountain, the Biedermeier café, and the parish church with the Oil Mountain bring Grein's city history to life. From the town square, follow the signs towards Greinburg Castle. Above Grein towers the castle with a sala terrena, beautiful arcade courtyard, and the Upper Austrian Shipping Museum. Extraordinary exhibits and the history of shipping on the Danube are documented here. Leaving Greinburg Castle, follow the Kreuznerbach directly towards the Grein motor skills park. Cross the arch bridge to find a beautiful campsite directly on the Danube and the bike and passenger ferry. Near Esperanto Square, you can admire a "snake anchor", a sundial, and the Mühlviertel fountain. Following the promenade towards the starting point, at the end of the Grein city walk await the city cinema and the café and pastry shop Schörgi with a sunny terrace near the Danube. A delicious ice cream sundae rounds off the city walk here.

Wonderful view of Grein
The town fountain on Grein's historic town square, also known as the Meaggaubrunnen, dates back to 1872 and was named after Count Leonhard Helfrich Meggau, who owned Greinburg Castle. The citizens of Grein erected a stone monument in the town square to Count Meggau, who was socially committed to the people of Grein.

Sundial on the Danube promenade
Since the summer of 1993, a unique timepiece, designed and built by physics and astronomy student Werner Riegler from Grein, has adorned the banks of the Danube in the Esperantoplatz area. This sundial is a so-called equatorial sundial, in which the shadow of a wire rope stretched parallel to the earth's axis falls on a scale. It is then possible to read the time from a semi-cylindrical dial with an accuracy of around two minutes. The frame of this clock is made of chrome-nickel steel, while the dial and scales are made of brass. In addition to the time display, a granite globe is attached to the front. This globe with the engraved continents is illuminated by the sun in the same way as the earth itself. You can therefore see from the shadow boundaries in which countries the sun is currently shining. The fascinating thing about a clock like this is that it is easy to understand how it works and therefore easy to learn about the connections between the movement of the earth and the sun.
