Dr Rudolf Kirchschläger was born in Grafenau, Niederkappel, in 1915 and was baptised a few days later in the Niederkappel parish church. As a result, Dr Kirchschläger repeatedly visited our town with his family in his later years. He celebrated his 70th and 80th baptism anniversaries in Mühlviertel Cathedral. Dr Kirchschläger died in Vienna on 30 March 2000. In his memory, a memorial plaque was placed in the parish church (donated by OSR Konrad Jäger) and a memorial stone was erected on the site of his birthplace in Grafenau 21. There is also a Kirchschläger trail that leads from the former family home on the Kleine Mühl to the Mühlviertel Cathedral.

You should visit Untermuehl, a lovely part of St.Martin, which is located just beside the Danube cycle path. This is the place to be if you are keen on hiking.

The 924 ha big European bird reserve "Oberes Donau- und Aschachtal" consists of two totally different parts: The Danube valley with its steep slopes between the border near Passau and Aschach and the ravines of the small river Aschach between Waizenkirchen and Hartkirchen.

The landscape of the bird reserve is formed by ravine forests and rocky slopes. In the flat hillsides dry and wet slope and ravine forests, oaks and beech trees move to mixed forests.

Besides, heaps of rubble and impressive rock formations can be found near the Schlögener Schlinge.

Some rare fish species live in this part of the Danube. Birds that are protected by the reserve are the black stork, the wasp buzzard, the eagle owl and other ones.

Scheue Räuber...   
Dieser scheue Geselle ist der Fischotter (Lutra lutra), ein am Wasser lebender Marder. Er wird etwa 130 cm lang, kommt in ganz Europa vor und lebt vor allem dämmerungsaktiv in schwer zugänglichen Uferzonen. Sein Revier kann bis zu 40 km Wasserlauf betragen und ist durch Duftmarken gekennzeichnet. Sogenannte „Ottersteige“ bezeichnen Pfade, die er immer als Ein- und Ausstieg in seine unterirdischen Baue benutzt. Fischotter sind Allesfresser und deshalb wenig wählerisch. Zu den Beutetieren gehören Fische, Insekten, Krebse und Säugetiere. Zum Leidwesen mancher Teichwirte jagt der Fischotter natürlich gerne dort, wo es ihm leicht gemacht wird und hat schon so manchen Fischteich leer geräumt. Häufig wird das durch Einzäunungen oder Ablenkteiche verhindert.

In Niederkappel kam einst eine "Geheimnisvolle Magd" einer armen Bauernfamilie zu Hilfe. Was es mit der fleißigen Frau auf sich hatte und wie sich die Armut doch noch von dem Bauernhof anwendete, erzählt eine spannende Donau-Sage.

Bewaldetes Hochland...   
Etwa ein Viertel bis ein Drittel des zentralmühlviertler Hochlandes sind von Wald bedeckt, die Bewaldung nimmt seit wenigen Jahrhunderten ständig zu. Auch heute setzt sich dieser Trend durch die Aufgabe landwirtschaftlicher Nutzungen („Bauernsterben“) fort und führte in den letzten 20 Jahren zu einer Waldzunahme von 5 bis 10 %. Natürliche Waldtypen wären hauptsächlich Buchenwälder, tatsächlich ist im aktuellen Waldbild die Fichte der dominante Waldbaum. Ausnahmen sind Tieflagen und steile, naturnahe Hangwälder, wo vermehrt Laubbäume vorkommen. Werden die Fichtenforste jahrzehntelang unternutzt, sind sie anfälliger für Unwetterereignisse und Folgeschäden, wie Käferbefall (Buchdrucker) und Kleine Fichtenblattwespe.

In Eintracht mit der Natur zu leben ist wundervoll und wenn man die Natur und ihre Wesen zu schätzen weiß und andere nicht um ihr Glück beneidet, wird sie es einem auch danken. "Die hilfreichen Zapfen" erzählen davon, wie ein Waldmandl einem armen Köhler ein zufriedens Leben bescherte.

Chronik    
Im Jahre 1875 haben sich die Ortsgemeinden Feldkirchen, Bergheim, Freudenstein, Lacken, Landshaag, Mühldorf und Mühllacken zur Gemeinde Feldkirchen konstituiert, die Markterhebung wurde 1985 gefeiert. Das Wappen symbolisiert das Wasser (blau) von Donau und Pesenbach, die Landwirtschaft (gelb) mit den fruchtbaren Ebenen und dem freistehenden Kirchturm. Fläche: 39,49 km2, Einwohner aktuell: 5144, Ortschaften 24. Als Tourismusgemeinde in zentraler Lage mit umfassender Freizeitinfrastruktur und einer Vielzahl an Beherbergungs- und Gastronomiebetrieben gewann Feldkirchen an der Donau sehr große Bedeutung.

Tipp    
Der Kerzenstein befindet sich im wildromantischen und sagenreichen Pesenbachtal und ist das Wahrzeichen des Naturschutzgebietes.

Das ganz in der Nähe von Feldkirchen liegende Bad Mühlacken ist ein bekannter und beliebter Kneipp-Kurort, dessen "Heil-Wasser" schon manch schlimme Krankheit kuriert hat.

While there are many variations on the story, it most frequently begins with a farmer who had promised his soul to the Devil in exchange for good fortune. Full of remorse, he soon wanted to get out of this bargain again. He returned all the money to the Devil and exclaimed a quick prayer in despair. The Devil got really furious and rammed his pitchfork into the stone - and these signs are still visible.

The second legend regarding the Devil and the Stone Cross also occurred in Lembach. The Devil got into a serious fight with a farmer at night. The farmer cut off a Devil´s horn. Racked with pain, the Devil slammed his foot into a stone. And these signs are still visible as well. Out of gratitude, the farmer then had the Stone Cross installed.
