Traditional pilgrimage to Mariazell
Making a pilgrimage to Mariazell has been the traditional Austrian pilgrimage par excellence for many centuries. Mariazell has been a place of pilgrimage since 1266 and is still popular today. Accordingly, many paths lead to Mariazell, one of which is the Upper Austrian Mariazell Trail, which starts at the pilgrimage church on the Pöstlingberg in Linz.

From Linz, the pilgrimage first leads to the baroque Augustinian canons' monastery of St Florian. Here the Mariazellerweg turns southwards to Steyr.

1st day's stage from Pöstlingberg to St Florian (20 km)

Pöstlingberg - Linz - Ebelsberg - St. Florian

The Upper Austrian Mariazell Trail begins at the baroque pilgrimage basilica on the Pöstlingberg (539 m) with its wonderful panoramic view of Linz. The next 3 hours to Ebelsberg (264 m) are dedicated to crossing the city of Linz. We recommend that you take a map of Linz with you. From Urfahr (via Kreuzweg, Knabenseminarstraße, Freistädterstraße), cross the Nibelungenbrücke bridge to the main square, then take Landstraße and Wiener Straße to Ebelsberg. Continue southwards on Florianerstraße, under the motorway bridge, shortly afterwards uphill to the left (together with Brucknerweg and Salzsteigweg 09) to a hill (338 m) and on to Ölkam (297 m). Here we follow the signpost directly to St. Florian. Now follow the road to Gemering and turn right southwards to St. Florian, where we come across the monastery "Am Ölberg", which is well worth a longer visit. From Ebelsberg to St. Florian approx. 1.5 to 2 hours.

2nd stage of the day from St. Florian to Steyr (31 km)

St. Florian - Maria Laah - Losensteinleiten - Christkindl - Steyr

The stage (06 and partly 09 route) starts in St. Florian (310 m) from the monastery southwards to Niederfraunleiten, on to Fernbach, Grünbrunn, to the Mayr farmstead at Pucha, on to Harmannsdorf, to the Hofkirchen-Losensteinleiten road, either to the Maria Laah church or directly on the road to Losensteinleiten, from here about 3.5 hours. Then the 06 and 09 paths separate. From here, follow the 06 markings southwards to Oberwolfern (359 m). Pass the Öttl farmstead through the Enzengarner forest to Enzengarn (396 m). Past the Huber farmstead to Damm (334 m), then over the main road and down to the Steyr, over the Kruglbrücke (footbridge) towards Rosenegg Castle and Christkindlstraße and the Christkindl pilgrimage church (347 m). From Losensteinleiten to Christkindl approx. 3.5 hours. From Christkindl directly eastwards via Christkindlweg and Redtenbacherstraße to Steyr town centre (approx. 40 minutes). Alternatively, it is also possible to hike directly to St. Ulrich via Garsten.
