Hartkirchen: Schaunberg Loop Tour

Description:
The loop trail starts in the village centre and leads past Karling and Pupping through the cultured landscape of the Eferding Basin to the ascent of Schaunberg Castle Ruins at the airfield in Pupping. From there one follows a nice forestry trail uphill to the castle ruins. The loop trail is picturesque and offers interesting insights into the cultured landscape (old farms, a mill). Absolute highlight of the trail are the Schaunberg Castle Ruins from which one enjoys a fantastic view of the Eferding Basin. Having visited the castle ruins one follow a forestry trail parallel to the road that leads past a guesthouse. A non-asphalt road connects Wolfsfurth with Poxham (Franzosenkreuz Cross). Past Hacking one get back to Hartkirchen.

Der Rundweg beginnt im Ortskern und führt über Karling und Deinham nach Pupping, durch die Kulturlandschaft des Eferdinger Beckens zum Aufstieg zur Ruine Schaunberg beim Flugfeld in Pupping. Dort steigt man einen schönen Waldweg zur Ruine hinauf. Der Rundweg ist durchwegs beschaulich und bietet dem Wanderer interessante Einblicke in die Kulturlandschaft (alte Bauernhöfe, eine Mühle). Ein absolutes Highlight ist natürlich die Burgruine Schaunberg mit einem herrlichen Ausblick über des Eferdinger Becken. Diese macht den Rundwanderweg auch für Zureisende interessant. Nach Besichtigung der Ruine folgt man einem Waldweg parallel zur Straße hinunter nach Rienberg. Über Wolfsfurth, Poxham (Franzosenkreuz) und Hacking erreicht man wieder Hartkirchen.

Schaunberg Castle Ruins:
Schaunberg Castle used to be Austria’s biggest fortress (17,500m²). 186 steps lead to an observation platform from which one enjoys a fantastic view of the Eferding Basin, the Mühlviertel district and of course the Danube.
