The Perg-Strudengau Leader Region is located in the south-eastern part of the Mühlviertel, comprises the majority of the political district of Perg (24 municipalities) and borders on the federal state of Lower Austria. As a rural area, the region is bordered by the Danube to the south and the granite hills of the Mühlviertel in the north of the region offer beautiful views over the landscape, which is economically characterised by the Danube. The Danube, the region's economic and tourist lifeline, also gave the Strudengau its name. Dangerous narrow sections of the "Strudel" and "Wirbel", which were defused in the 19th and 20th centuries, are behind the regional term Strudengau.
Leader is a community initiative of the European Union that has been in existence since 1991. It promotes innovative strategies for the development of selected rural regions.
