"Danube – and Granite"
The shipping pier Mauthausen is situated centrally along the Danube Promenade, near the town centre with its bourgeois taverns. Also it is the starting point for bicycle and hiking tours in this region. The Danube ferry connects Mauthausen with the historic city Enns on the other side of the Danube.
Mauthausen was once known as an important port at the Danube and trading centre for iron and salt. Additionally it was known for the fine granite, which adorns the Viennese palatial buildings and holds the old bridges of Budapest.
Mauthausen-memorial: This memorial commemorates the victims of the Nazi tyranny during the 2nd world war in the concentration camp Mauthausen. It reflects in many ways the possibilities of commemoration, collective memory and transmission of knowledge.
