The THREE_RIVERS_CITY Passau at the confluence of Danube, Inn and Ilz offers you a magnificent start to a great bike route. So be sure to take your time for the sights of this "Bavarian Venice": Explore the baroque old town or the prince-bishop's residence with the Museum at the Cathedral. The worthwhile St. Stephan's Cathedral is also directly on your route. It houses the largest cathedral organ in the world with almost 18,000 pipes. You will also pass the Glass Museum with its more than 15,000 exhibited objects of European glass.
But this is just the beginning of this varied stage. An exciting view is offered by Krämpelstein Castle, which towers high above the Danube on a rock. According to legend, a tailor once fell to his death here from the so-called "Schneiderschlössl" while trying to bury his goat in the Danube. Equally stimulating are the Gothic murals in the Peter's Church in Pyrawang: Although they date from the 14th century, they appear surprisingly modern.
For young cyclists, the "Water Experience Mini-Danube" in charming Engelhartszell is the highlight of the stage. Not only a themed playground attracts here, but also the "Giant of the Danube", the nearly two-meter-long sturgeon in the large aquarium. Perhaps you have time to also make a quick visit to the nearby magnificent Trappist monastery Engelhartszell with its remarkable Rococo church and the splendid monastery garden. The SCHÜTZ Art Museum shows high-ranking artworks from classical modernism to international contemporary art.
Shortly before reaching Schlögen, the medieval Haichenbach castle ruin waves from the opposite Danube bank – from that ridge around which the famous "Schlögener Danube loop" bends.

Route description
From Passau main station, first head north until you meet the Danube. Here turn right and follow the road to the Glass Museum, where you turn right again into Schrottgasse. Here a first detour to St. Stephen's Cathedral is already worthwhile, which has had the largest cathedral organ in the world since 1928. After crossing the Inn, you ride downstream on sometimes narrow and winding paths to two small wooded islands.
At the height of Erlau – a village on the opposite riverbank – the Danube makes a distinctive left curve. Here is Krämpelstein Castle, often also called Schneiderschlössl. It consists of a residential tower and an attached palace. The walls are only partially preserved. Already here you can admire the Donauleiten nature reserve on the other bank: It marks the southern edge of the Bavarian Forest and offers an enormous biodiversity and impressive botany. In Pyrawang a short visit to the small Peter's Church is worthwhile, where Gothic murals from the 14th century were discovered during restoration work.
In Engelhartszell, highlights include the Trappist abbey and the Mini-Danube (with large aquarium). Since 2018, you can stay on the new cycle path on the south bank here and head towards Oberranna. Visit the Roman fortress Oberranna - the best-preserved Roman building in Upper Austria and part of the 2018 state exhibition.
You cross the Wesenufer directly at the river and follow the newly developed Danube cycle path to Schlögen. Soon you see the Haichenbach ruin for the first time and then reach the first stage destination: Schlögen.

Our family business with attached farm is located 1 km before Engelhartszell near the Danube power station Jochenstein.
For our guests we offer free of charge a covered swimming pool with sunbathing area, deckchairs and children's playground. Permanent car parking and motorbike or bicycle parking facilities are available. This is the ideal place to start your cycling tour along the Danube Cycle Path or your hiking tour along the Danube Trail.

In the 1950s, the inn was nicknamed the "Dreimäderlhaus" (three-wheeled house) because of the innkeeper's three pretty daughters, which aroused the curiosity of many a young boy and prompted him to stop in. In 1960, daughter Hedwig and her husband Eduard Schlager, who was the first to drive the workers of the Quelle mail-order company to Linz and back on weekdays with his own bus, took over the innkeeping business after his untimely death in 1976. During this time, extensive conversion and renovation work was carried out. Peter Schlager took over the business from his mother in 1995. The inn, located directly on the Nibelungen federal road, is an insider's tip for the many fishing enthusiasts who try their luck at the adjacent ponds of the Donauschlinge. With well-organised musical mornings in the summer months, the innkeeper always succeeds in attracting mainly guests from the community and from neighbouring Haibach ob der Donau. They are treated to good home cooking and a speciality of the house, home-roasted Steckerlfischen. In winter, the aforementioned ponds and the in-house ice rinks are an Eldorado for curling. On fine winter days, up to a hundred curlers can be found here, and of course the Schlager Inn provides them with warm and cold drinks.

Ride with us to the other bank of the Danube and enjoy your further cycle tour on the Danube Cycle Path in the direction of Vienna or in the direction of Passau! We also have the "Überfuhrhaus": Here we offer our guests: drinks, ice cream, coffee, homemade cakes and tarts as well as small snacks. There are also souvenirs, flowers and decorations!
From Au on the left bank of the Danube, the Hotel Donauschlinge cycle ferry takes you to the right bank of the Danube, from where you can continue your journey through the Danube loop.
The Riverresort Donauschlinge, your first stage destination on the Danube cycle path Passau - Vienna, is located directly at the landing stage.
The bike repair shop is located directly on the Danube cycle path from Passau to Vienna.
E-bikes as well as trekking bikes for young and old can be rented.

Das Donautal hat ein äußerst ästhetisches Erscheinungsbild, das seinen Höhepunkt wohl hier in der Schlögener Schlinge findet. Hier zeigt sich die Kraft und Schönheit der Natur. Gewässer sind seit jeher für den Menschen von Bedeutung gewesen. Durch die Schifffahrt kam und kommt auch heute noch der Donau eine wichtige Rolle zu. Eine weniger bekannte Nutzung im Donautal ist der Anbau von Wein. Zwischen 1000 und 1300 n. Chr., in der mittelalterlichen Wärmezeit, wurde in den Durchbruchstälern und in den niederen Lagen Oberösterreichs Wein angebaut. Auf der Höhe von Inzell, am linken Hang des Donautales gab es eine kleinräumige Weinanlage mit Mauern und Treppenverbindungen. Heute ist sie komplett mit Gebüsch überwuchert. In Hilkering, nahe Aschach wird aktuell wieder Wein angebaut.
Hoch oben, inmitten der Schlögener Schlinge thront das sogenannte Kerschbaumer Schlössl - wie es zu seinem Namen kam, und was "Der verfluchte Kirschenkern" damit zu tun hatte, erfahren Sie in der gleichnamigen Donau-Sage.
Große Fenster und die traumhafte Terrasse geben einen imposanten Blick auf Donau und Veste Oberhaus frei. Die raffinierte Einrichtung aus edlen Materialien sowie ein eleganter Fest- und modern ausgestatteter Konferenzraum geben dem Restaurant ein einzigartiges Ambiente.
