Sumerauerhof St. Florian

St. Florian, Oberösterreich, Österreich

A Warm Welcome to the Sumerauerhof in St. Florian

The Sumerauerhof in St. Florian is one of the largest square-layout farmsteads in central Upper Austria. Many areas have been preserved in their original condition and offer a glimpse into the living conditions of wealthy farmers in the Florianer Land region at the end of the 19th century.

In addition to the historic rooms, new themed areas have been offered since 2022.
A petting zoo with rare animal species, a hiking trail around the farm, a farm garden, and interactive educational stations address current topics such as biodiversity and highlight animal extinction and the loss of plant variety. The Sumerauerhof family and day-trip experience is rounded out by a creative nature playground.

Special exhibitions cover a wide range of topics.

Programs for School Groups
Through nature and culture education programs, students learn more about the unique characteristics of the animal inhabitants on and around the farm, and much more. You can find all the information here: www.ooekultur.at/kulturvermittlung

Dogs are not permitted on the farm premises, the playground, or in the petting zoo.
However, dogs are welcome in the inner courtyard on a leash.

History

The farm appears as early as 1200 in a document issued by Bishop Wolfker of Passau. At that time, however, it was not yet a square farmstead, but rather a group of buildings constructed of either clay or wood, depending on their purpose. In 1378, the Sumerauerhof was listed among the major estates of the St. Florian Abbey. Over the course of the 17th century, the residential and farm buildings were likely combined to form a classic square farmstead. In 1855, a fire destroyed part of the residential wing. The farmstead was subsequently rebuilt, and its structure remained largely unchanged until 1971. In 1978, the Sumerauerhof—one of the largest farms in Upper Austria—was purchased by the State of Upper Austria and opened as an open-air museum.

Today, with its wood-paneled parlor and, above all, its living quarters—some of which have been preserved in their original state—the farm offers a glimpse into the domestic living conditions of the wealthy farmers of the Florianer Landl region at the end of the 19th century.
