The second stage of this enjoyable river cycling tour, in search of the fascination of the UNESCO World Heritage Danube Limes, leads upstream on the outer side of the Danube Limes – in the land of the barbarians – back to Passau. After a magnificent view deep down on the natural wonder of the Schlögen Danube loop and an authentic Danube crossing with a bike ferry, idyllic river cycling along rare hillside and gorge forests delights. Thoughts inevitably awaken of the eternal forests of the free Germanic tribes in Roman times. Every border has two sides!

The famous natural wonder Schlögen Danube loop is the magnificent start of this stage. Deeply embedded, the Danube lies here in the long breakthrough section of the Upper Danube valley and changes its flow direction twice by almost 180 degrees within a few kilometers. After overnighting “in” the castle on the Danube bank, a short hike up to the viewing platform “Schlögener Donaublick” is recommended: only the view from above reveals the fascination of this natural spectacle – simply breathtaking! Tip: Enjoy the scenic film in early morning, then have breakfast (total walking time ~ 1 hour)! Now the bike tour can begin. Like Roman scouting troops once did, we cross the mighty Danube via a (bike) ferry. The waters are tame today, feared in the past. Upon reaching the north bank, we stand beyond the protective Danube Limes – in the land of the barbarians!
Now follows idyllic pleasure river cycling at its best: the steep valley slopes delight with wonderful mixed forests – the last large hillside and gorge (primeval) forests of Central Europe. Quiet, well-paved side roads follow the broad Danube band. And almost no houses. An intense river-nature experience and a feeling of remoteness set in. Here you can sense a little how the Romans perceived the land of the “barbarians.” The Roman historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus (1st century) described the land of the free Germanic tribes as “... either frightening through forests or horrible through its swamps ...”. The background: the Mediterranean homeland of the Romans had already been cultivated for centuries. Thus, large forests caused unease for them. The free Germanic tribes, on the other hand, felt comfortable in the extensive primeval forests. They were by no means uncultured primeval forest barbarians. There was no single people, but countless various tribes who settled and lived very differently. Thus, a rich culture developed, which, however, fundamentally differed from Roman culture.
At the Zillenhafen in Freizell, a Roman resting place offers insight into Roman military shipping. Appropriate, since one of the last Zille builders of Austria is located next door. Zillen are very flat wooden boats that were used in similar form already since Roman times. Tip: Here there is the rare opportunity to rent such a motorized Zille even without a boat license!
From the Jochenstein power plant, the lightly trafficked Danube bank road continues to the wonderful market of Obernzell. (Water) castle, historic market square, butcher, ... a true Bavarian jewel! Rare graphite is mined nearby. Ceramics can be made particularly fireproof by this additive, but also acquire a characteristic black coloration. Celts and Romans knew these deposits and traded with this black pottery. Graphite – the black gold! The bike runs easily on a separate cycle path along the now well-used Danube bank road and follows the meanders of the Danube valley. The forest slopes become lower. At the rest stop “Donau-Nixe,” a last view back into the natural gorge of the Upper Danube valley opens. The surroundings become more urban.
The view perspective of the confluence of the three rivers of Passau from this side is the final highlight: the rivers, the magnificent old town peninsula, the Oberhaus fortress, ... – simply breathtaking! First, we cross the Black Ilz. The Prinzregent-Luitpold-Bridge brings us from the land of the barbarians across the broad Danube back into the Roman Empire. Right after the bridge, the Roman square reminds us of the castles on the old town peninsula. The connected Danube harbor was located at the height of the magnificent town hall square (easy to recognize by the building ensemble: old customs office, old town hall with tower and new town hall). At the main station, our discovery bike tour in search of the fascination of the UNESCO World Heritage Danube Limes ends.

Der Bergkäse stammt aus der Schweizer Bio-Sennerei Andeer in Graubünden.

The story of in Neustift im Mühlkreis began decades ago, when Markus Luger's great-grandfather laid the foundation stone with a small inn. Today, it has become a culinary jewel that celebrates the Danube, its fish and the Mühlviertel region in a masterful way. Here, where time seems to pass more slowly, the Luger family welcomes their guests with a warmth that makes you feel that you are not just in a restaurant, but in the heart of a passion that has been lived for four generations.
The Luger family business: that's Markus, his aunts, uncles and his daughter, who together make the business what it is - a place filled with a deep connection to nature and a history that began with a passion for fishing and has been passed down through generations. Markus and his family specialise in one type of fish in particular - Danube fish, which they catch fresh in front of the house. Preparing the fish at Gasthaus Luger requires a special skill: cupping - an almost forgotten technique of fish preparation in which fine, parallel incisions are made in the skin of the fish, allowing spices, marinades or other flavours to penetrate deep into the fish flesh. The range of fish that can be tasted at the restaurant extends from white fish such as aitel, barbel and bream to noble fish such as trout, char, pikeperch and carp. But it's not just fish lovers who get their money's worth at Gasthaus Luger, as the restaurant offers a variety of different dishes ranging from traditional Austrian cuisine - such as the Mühlviertler Bierschnitzel filled with bacon, sheep's cheese and herbs - to vegetarian options and homemade pastries. The cuisine at Gasthaus Luger is characterised by the use of ingredients from the restaurant's own farm and many local producers.
For Markus, the connection to the region is not just a promise, but a way of life that has been built up and strengthened through years of relationships with local farmers and producers. Since 1529 Haichenbach went to ruin. In later times even the name fell into oblivion. The ruins, around which many legends entwine, were named after the nearby Kerschbaumergut "Kerschbaumerschlößl" (legend: " "The tree snakes of Haichenbach" by Prof. Fritz Winkler).
The ruins have been converted into a viewing platform, from which there is a breathtaking view over the Danube loop Schlögen.

In der Halle der Riesen…
Die Rotbuche (Fagus sylvatica) ist eine der wichtigsten Baumarten Mitteleuropas. Laubmischwälder mit hohem Buchenanteil stellen die potenzielle natürliche Vegetation Mitteleuropas dar, die sich ohne Zutun des Menschen einstellen würde. Ihre ölhaltigen Samen, die Bucheckern, wurden früher zur Schweinemast verwendet und trotz leichter Giftigkeit auch vom Menschen als Nahrung genutzt. Der Buchenwald kommt in den oberen und flachen Hangbereichen vor, und ist oft als Hallenwald ausgebildet, der nur einen schütteren Unterwuchs aus Weißer Hainsimse und anderen prägenden Arten enthält (Hainsimsen-Buchenwald). Diese Wälder machen einen recht imposanten Eindruck. In manchen Bereichen steigt die Buche bis in die Täler herunter und bildet artenreiche Waldmeister-Buchenwälder aus.
Wo sich heute die Bastei befindet, stand einst ein prächtiges Schloss. Nach einer Plünderung war der Sohn des Ritters der einzige Überlebende - wie das möglich war und wer ihn erwartete, als er nach langer Zeit wieder zurückkehrte, erzählt die Donau-Sage "Ein Geist auf Wachposten".

Donauleite und Aulandschaft…
Zwei Gegensätze gibt es hier zu entdecken. Charakteristisch für das Donautal sind die steilen bewaldeten Hänge, die für ihren Artenreichtum bekannt sind. Auf der anderen Seite der Donau dagegen geht es etwas flacher zu. Im Blickfeld liegt die Soldatenau, die einerseits als Wasserversorgungsreservoir für die Stadt Passau dient und andererseits einen seltenen Lebensraum für das Donautal darstellt. In dem tief eingegrabenen Engtal gibt es nur wenige großflächige Auenstandorte. Darüber hinaus wurde der weitgehend unbeeinflusste Flußverlauf durch zahlreiche Flussregulierungen grundlegend verändert. Viele Renaturierungsmaßnahmen zielen darauf ab, noch vorhandene Standorte zu erhalten oder neue zu schaffen.
In früheren Zeiten war es harte Arbeit, Schiffe (ohne Motor) donauaufwärts zu befördern. Da kam so manchem Schiffer schon ein Fluchen über die Lippen. Wie einigen Schiffern das Fluchen und Schimpfen ausgetrieben wurde, erzählt die Donau-Sage "Verflixte Fließsteine!".

Es klappert die Mühle…
Fließgewässer stellen wertvolle Lebensräume dar und erfüllen vielfältige Aufgaben im Ökosystem. So stellen sie Wanderrouten für Tier- und Pflanzenarten dar, ermöglichen eine Vernetzung der Landschaft und dienen der Entwässerung nach Hochwässern. Naturnahe Bäche zeichnen sich durch hohe Vielfalt an Strukturen wie Prallhänge, Kiesbänke, Kolke, schnelle und langsame Fließabschnitte und einen natürlichen Verlauf aus. Eine oft durchgängige Begleitvegetation zum Beispiel aus Schwarzerlen, stellt ebenfalls ein Indiz für ein ökologisch bedeutsames Gewässer dar. Für den Menschen hatten Fließgewässer schon sehr früh z.B. für das Betreiben von Mühlen eine große Bedeutung. Die Grafenmühle gehört zu den ältesten Mühlen und Bäckereibetrieben Deutschlands.
Ein Mann aus Kellberg hatte einmal das Glück, ein fabelhaftes Wesen zu beobachten. Welches Wesen das war und wie es ausgesehen hat, erzählt die Donau-Sage "Was für ein prächtiges Untier".

Drei Flüsse – zwei Wandersteige
Am Dreiflüsse-Eck vereinen und mischen sich die Wasser der blauen Donau, des grünen Inn und der schwarzen Ilz, um gemeinsam unter dem Namen Donau weiter zufließen. Auf dieser Dreiflüsselandschaft siedelten einst Kelten, Römer und Bajuwaren. Sechshundert Jahre lang war Passau ein bischöfliches Fürstentum. In dieser Zeit entstand ihre italienisch-barocke Stadtkulisse. Heute ist die südliche Stadtgrenze der bayerischen Mittelstadt Passau gleichzeitig Landesgrenze zu Österreich. Passau ist Universitäts-, Kultur- und Tourismusstadt. Seit jeher bestimmen die drei Flüsse das Leben in Passau. Heute weisen sie Schiffsreisenden, Radfahrern und Wanderern den Weg. Am Startpunkt Passau treffen und vereinen sich in der Ilzstadt zwei Wandersteige - der bayerische "Goldsteig" aus dem Bayerischen Wald und der bayerisch-österreichische "Donausteig".
Die Sage "Von den Nibelungen" ist weithin bekannt. Der zweite Teil des Liedes ist angeblich am Hof des Passauer Bischofs Wolfger von Erla entstanden.
The contrasts of the Danube slopes can be recognised from the viewpoints.
On the one side: rocky, dry, steep slopes. On the other side: flat areas and gently rising hills.
The steep slopes of the Donauleiten offer a variety of different habitats in a very small space. Shady forests, steep rocky precipices, boulder streams and narrow stream gorges occur side by side. These different habitats allow for a high diversity of animal and plant species.
Two particularly interesting inhabitants are the green lizard and the Aesculapian snake.
The green lizard is threatened with extinction in Bavaria and highly endangered in Austria. The blue-coloured throat of the males during the mating season is striking.
The Aesculapian snake is the largest snake in Central Europe and a skilful climber. It can be found as a symbol at every pharmacy, where it skilfully climbs the Aesculapian staff.
According to legend, the devil was also up to mischief around the Penzenstein.
The Danube legend "To hell with the stone!" reveals how the area was rid of him and why his footprints can still be seen on the Penzenstein today.

Felsige Wohnungen…
Zu den imposantesten Landschaftselementen zählen die steilen Felsstandorte der Donauleitn. Lichte Kiefer- und Eichenbestände besiedeln diese Lebensräume. Besonders reichhaltig ist hier die Reptilienfauna, aber auch der Uhu, die größte Eulenart fühlt sich hier wohl. Mit etwas Glück kann der aufmerksame Beobachter ihn auf seinen abendlichen Beutezügen beobachten. Wer besonders Acht gibt, kann vielleicht einen Blick auf einen der Bodenbewohner erhaschen. Einige Eidechsenarten rascheln durch das Gebüsch, unter ihnen die Smaragdeidechse. Sie ist mit ihren 35 cm Gesamtlänge eine der größten heimischen Eidechsen. Der Name bezieht sich auf die grünliche Färbung der erwachsenen Tiere. Besonders auffällig ist die in der Paarungszeit blau gefärbte Kehle der Männchen. In den Donauleiten bevorzugt sie Felsbereiche und Steinhalden mit viel Gebüsch und Dornensträuchern, wo sie sich vor Fressfeinden verstecken kann.
Die Ruine Haichenbach wird im Volksmund auch Kerschbaumer Schlössl genannt - wie das Schloss zu seinem Namen kam, erzählt die Donau-Sage "Spuck auf die Rache!".

Krustentiere in den Donauleiten…
Der Steinkrebs (Austropotambius torrentium), der kleinste Vertreter der heimischenFlusskrebsarten, bevorzugt strukturreiche, im Sommer kühle Bäche als Lebensraum. Dabei versteckt er sich gerne unter Steinen oder Felsplatten. Sogar Kleinstgewässer können von ihm besiedelt werden. Er ist ein nacht- und dämmerungsaktiver Geselle. Der Eintrag von Schadstoffen in die Bäche hat dazu geführt, dass der Steinkrebs sehr selten geworden ist. Doch die größte Gefahr für ihn ist die Krebspest. Übertragen wird die sehr ansteckende Pilzkrankheit durch amerikanische Flusskrebse, die zu Speisezwecken angesiedelt wurden. So hat sich auch in den Donauleiten der letzte Steinkrebs 1997 mit der Krebspest angesteckt. Seitdem hat man keinen der kleinen Krebse mehr gesehen.

The fort
With an internal area of just 0.8 ha, the camp is described as a small fort and was probably designed for a garrison of 100 to 150 men. A 1.65 m thick defensive wall with a wooden walkway surrounded the rectangular complex. Analysis of the finds showed that the fort was built around 170 AD and the area was used until well into the 5th century.
The civilian settlement
The small civilian settlement(vicus), which was located in the area of today's campsite, was built around 150 AD. The Roman vicus of Schlögen probably served as a road station as well as a landing and reloading point for ships. The bathing building occupied a central position in the settlement and was located directly next to the road.
The rest areas consist of an exposed concrete column, reminiscent of a Roman milestone, bearing a Roman head created by artist Miguel Horn and containing information about the local community, the Danube cycle path and the Romans, as well as a 5 metre long rest bench made of concrete and stone and a paved floor made of Danube pebbles. The architecture is based on design elements from Roman times.
The design for the Roman rest areas was the result of a competition organised jointly with the University of Art and Design Linz and won by student Lukas Beltrame. An important partner in the construction of the squares is the construction academy in Steyregg, which produced all the built-in parts for the squares with its apprentices.
Das Donautal hat ein äußerst ästhetisches Erscheinungsbild, das seinen Höhepunkt wohl hier in der Donauschlinge Schlögen findet. Hier zeigt sich die Kraft und Schönheit der Natur.
Die Donauschlinge Schlögen wurde 2008 zum „Naturwunder Oberösterreich´s“ ernannt. Diese – epigenetische Durchbruchstal genannt – Rarität ist entstanden, als sich die Donau in den weichen Schichten des Tertiär ihr mäanderförmiges Bett suchte und dieses später auf dem harten Granitgestein beibehalten musste. Durch die nachfolgende Hebung der Landmasse grub sich die Donau fast 300 m tief ein und schuf auf diese Weise das Engtal, welches in der Schlögener Donauschlinge nahezu einen vollen Kreis bildet.
Die Fürstbischöfe von Passau ließen im 15. Jh. "in der Zell"an der Donau eine gotische Wasserburg errichten und im 16. Jh. zu einem Renaissance-Schloss ausbauen. Ein Glücksfall war es, dass der Freistaat Bayern das Schloss erwarb und eine Zweigstelle des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums errichtete. Das Museum, das Keramik von ihren Anfängen in der Jungsteinzeit bis zur Gegenwart zeigt, lädt zum Besuch ein.

When passing by boat the monastery Engelhartszell which is located on the right bank of the Danube, the castle Rannariedel appears on a wooded steep hill. Over the years the castle was leased by various members of the nobility. Today it is owned by a private person.

Die Veste Niederhaus liegt in Passau unterhalb der Veste Oberhaus an einer Landzunge, an der Ilz und Donau zusammenfließen.
Die Burg Niederhaus wurde im Jahr 1250 in Verbindung mit der Veste Oberhaus erbaut. Verbunden sind die beiden Burgen mit einem doppelten Wehrgang.
Die Veste Niederhaus war lange Zeit im Besitz der Fürstbischöfe. 1890 erwarb der Historienmaler Ferdinand Wagner die Burg.
2003-2008 wurde das Niederhaus renoviert. Die Burg Niederhaus ist seit 1890 in Privatbesitz.
Since 1820 the family Königsdorfer builds the for the Danube region typical flat-bottom wooden boats. The head of the house, Rudolf Königsdorfer, is one of the last boat builder on the Danube and ensures that every year about 80 handmade flat-bottom wooden boats leave his house.
And they still do much of old boat building tradition. 200 years of traditional knowledge.

Between the Jochenstein and Aschach power plants, the famous "Schlögener Donauschlinge", numerous castles, ruins, beautiful gravel beaches, but also imposing, steeply sloping hillsides and lovely villages await you on a river length of approx. 35 km.
All our paddles have comfortable side benches with backrests. So you can sit back, relax and enjoy!
A detailed briefing and the necessary safety equipment (such as life jacket, etc.) on board will let you start your trip carefree. Children's life jackets are available in all common sizes.
Our 5 hp and electric paddles may be driven by anyone over the age of 16; for the higher powered paddles, at least the 10 m boat driver's license for inland waters and waterways is required.
The canoes can be rented for a minimum of 2 hours, but also for a longer period of time or for the whole day or even for trips of several days. Telephone reservation is recommended, especially during the Austrian summer vacations.
