Musica Austriaca: Bibers Mensa sonora

The harpsichord, lute consort, and strings create a richly textured sound in Biber's *Klingende Taffel*.

The *Klingende Taffel* or *Instrumentalische Taffel-Music* was likely first performed in 1680 at the Archbishop’s court in Salzburg. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber lets his string ensemble really shine. A harpsichord and, of course, the lute consort (three lutes)—typical of Salzburg—provide richly colored accompaniment with expressive chords. A “night watchman” even makes an appearance, loudly calling on the people to observe the curfew. Enjoy the show!
