ORF Hiking Day in Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis

The event is part of the “Hiking Brings People Together” series. Hiking adventures invite participants to discover the Danube region of Upper Austria together. The focus is on experiencing nature, regional highlights, culinary delights, and exploring the hospitable communities together.

We’ll set off together at 10:00 a.m.— with an official opening and welcome right at the trailhead. That’s also where you’ll find the hiking passport: Anyone who participates in four “Hiking Brings People Together” events can look forward to a surprise prize. After all, exploring together isn’t just meant to bring people together—it should also be rewarded.

The Labyrinth Hiking Trail around Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis is a unique loop hike that combines nature experiences with spiritual and historical insights; for the ORF Hiking Day “Lust aufs Wandern,” it has been expanded to include magnificent views of the Danube and the Mühlviertel landscape. Right from the start, you’re immersed in the central theme: the three labyrinths that give the town its unique character.
From the sports complex through the town center, the trail first leads to the “Plant Labyrinth of Encounter” near the old water basin. Located close to the historic Salt Trail, this labyrinth invites you to arrive mindfully and leave everyday life behind. The path continues to the “Stone Labyrinth of Inner Contemplation,” made of Mühlviertel granite, where the quiet walk toward the center symbolizes reflection, patience, and clarity.
You then reach the “Art Labyrinth of Transformation” near the “Drei Linden,” the former execution site. The octagonal labyrinth, featuring artistic elements, symbolizes transformation and new perspectives, connecting history, art, and landscape.
From the “Drei Linden,” the tour heads toward Marsbach with views of the Alpine foothills. The following section along the ridge is one of the scenic highlights, offering impressive views of the Danube and sweeping vistas across the Danube Valley.
The Wimmer Sawmill in Bockmühle is a great spot for a lunch break. From there, the route continues to the Hundsfülling Chapel and on through Hundsfülling to Donauleiten, a pristine forest area with steep slopes leading down to the Danube.
The return route leads through forests and meadows back to the Hofkirchen i.M. sports complex. The trail combines encounters, moments of reflection, and transformation into a holistic experience—nestled in nature, history, and impressive views of the Danube.
