RE©CEPTION – Interpretation and Appropriation

The exhibition in the crypt of the New Cathedral in Koop, featuring the Upper Austrian State Art Collection  in Linz uses an artist residency to examine the reception and appropriation of the Upper Austrian Peasants’ War of 1626 and explores the reinterpretation of resistance, memory, and history in artistic works.

The exhibition is being created as part of an artist residency in cooperation with the KUNSTSAMMLUNG of the State of Upper Austria and explores the reception and appropriation of the Upper Austrian Peasants’ War of 1626. The starting point is the Peasants’ War as a symbol of resistance, whose interpretations have been politically reshaped over the centuries. It takes place in the crypt of the New Cathedral in Linz—a publicly accessible sacred space that, as a site of remembrance and interpretation, provides a fitting setting for engaging with history.
The focus is on questions of resistance, resilience, and memory: How has history been told, instrumentalized, and made relevant to this day? The artistic contributions explore how these narratives can be critically examined and what role art can play in reflecting on historical appropriation.
