On the 202nd anniversary of Anton Bruckner's birth, Riccardo Chailly and his Filarmonica della Scala will perform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4 with rising star Alexander Malofeev.
As a festive prologue to the 2026 Brucknerfest in Linz, Riccardo Chailly and his Filarmonica della Scala will perform two famous Fourth Symphonies on the occasion of Anton Bruckner’s 202nd birthday. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 was composed in 1877, at the same time as Bruckner’s Fourth; Tchaikovsky regarded Bruckner as one of the few “outstanding German composers.” A work full of energy, drama, and biographical depth, ranging from fateful tones to an exuberant “folk festival” finale—another parallel to Bruckner’s Fourth—which Tchaikovsky dedicated to his “best friend”; meaning his pen pal and patron Nadezhda von Meck. This is contrasted by Sergei Rachmaninoff’s brilliant Piano Concerto No. 4. Composed exactly 100 years ago as his first work after emigrating to the United States, it has one foot in the Romantic tradition and the other in modernism, steeped in expanded tonality, popular music, and jazz. The exceptional Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev returns to the Brucknerhaus as soloist for this performance.
This festive birthday celebration will be broadcast live as “Klassische Klangwolke 26” in Donaupark! Classical music fans can enjoy this concert featuring a world-class lineup starting at 7:30 p.m. under the open sky on the banks of the Danube.
