On Anton Bruckner's 202nd birthday, Riccardo Chailly and his Filarmonica della Scala bring Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony and Rachmaninoff's 4th Piano Concerto to the stage with shooting star Alexander Malofeev.
As a ceremonial prologue to the Brucknerfest Linz 2026, Riccardo Chailly and his Filarmonica della Scala will perform two famous fourth works on the occasion of Anton Bruckner's 202nd birthday. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony was composed in 1877 at the same time as Bruckner's Fourth, whom Tchaikovsky regarded as one of the few "outstanding German composers". A work full of energy, drama and biographical depth, between sounds of destiny and an exuberant 'folk festival' finale - another parallel to Bruckner's Fourth - which Tchaikovsky dedicated to his "best friend", meaning his pen pal and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. On the other hand, there is Sergei Rachmaninoff's brilliant 4th Piano Concerto. Composed exactly 100 years ago as the first work after his emigration to the USA, it has one foot in the Romantic tradition and the other in modernism, which is permeated by extended tonality, popular music and jazz. The exceptional Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev returns to the Brucknerhaus as soloist.Untere Donaulände 7, 4010 Linz
