EuroVelo 6 South from Passau to Bratislava

The Danube Cycle Route (EuroVelo 6) is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Europe. The Austrian section is approximately 390 kilometers long and runs from Passau, Germany, to the Slovakian border just outside Bratislava.

Southern Route Stops:
Passau – Engelhartszell – Schlögener Schlinge – Aschach – Wilhering Abbey – Linz – Enns – St. Florian – Machland – Grein – Ybbs/Persenbeug – Maria Taferl – Melk – Wachau – Spitz – Dürnstein – Krems – Traismauer – Klosterneuburg – Vienna – Carnuntum – Hainburg

This section runs entirely on bike paths along the picturesque river, where the romantic Schlögener Danube Bend is particularly worth noting. To discover modern art and architecture, we recommend stopping in Linz (European Capital of Culture 2009). The World Heritage Site in the Wachau Valley, with its castles, monasteries, and vineyards, is one of the most fascinating landscapes along the Danube Cycle Path.

We also highly recommend combining your bike tour on the Danube Cycle Path with a visit to cultural sites such as Austria’s largest Benedictine monastery, “Stift Melk,” and the famous ruins in Dürnstein, where the English King Richard the Lionheart was held captive. After a leisurely ride through the historic city of Krems, the route continues to Vienna, Austria’s enchanting capital, brimming with cultural highlights.

From Vienna to the Slovak border, you’ll pass through the Danube Floodplains National Park. There are also beautiful cycling and boating routes there, with the option to combine cycling and train travel. Finally, the route crosses the Danube to Hainburg and continues on to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
