After crossing the Ilz bridge, keep to the right and from now on always follow the signposted path along the Danube. Soon you will reach the Donauleiten nature reserve, whose steep slopes mark the southern edge of the Bavarian Forest. The slopes are mainly densely forested, with bizarre rock formations visible only in a few places. Due to the steep terrain and the south-facing orientation, nature in this area is mostly untouched and impresses with a variety of flora and fauna.
In Erlau you cross the stream of the same name and follow the cycle path to Obernzell. A few kilometers downstream you will pass the "Haus am Strom", whose architecture is reminiscent of the shape of a wave. With numerous water features, an exhibition and a beer garden with regional cuisine, the house is a welcome destination for a break.
In Niederranna, you can find one of the last zillen builders, the Zillenverleih Witti. Shortly after the Haichenbach ruins, the famous Schlögener Schlinge begins on the ridge, where the Danube describes a picturesque 180° bend. A short ferry ride takes you to Schlögen on the south bank.
The way back to Passau now takes place on the south bank. On the newly developed Danube cycle path you will reach Wesenufer. In order not to have to cycle on the busy main road to Engelhartszell, we switch to the north side (Niederranna) until the new cycle path on the south bank is completed. With the ferry Engelhartszell you can switch back to the south bank. In Engelhartszell the highlights are the Trappist monastery Engelszell and the Mini-Danube (with large aquarium).
Through the Danube villages of Kasten and Pyrawang, the bike path leads back to the three-river city of Passau.
Stopover tip: Not only fish lovers like to make a stopover at Gasthof Luguer in Kramesau on the northern bank of the Danube.
