FORMER and NOW:
At the entrance to the Naarntal valley lies the public swimming centre 'Schwimmschule' - Waldbad, built at the turn of the century. Many holidaymakers visited this establishment. A swimming instructor gave swimming lessons to children and adults there.
Perg was not only discovered as a summer holiday destination in recent years. Even 50 years ago, Perg was already popular with summer guests, mostly from Vienna and Linz (outstanding members of the Vienna Burgtheater were summer guests at the "Stiegenwirt" 40 years ago), who chose Perg as their summer holiday destination. Perg probably owes its attraction for summer guests first and foremost to the marvellous Naarn with its clear, iron-brown water. The swimming school, the baths, well maintained by the local beautification association, offer the most pleasant summer and water pleasures for young and old alike.
The favourable location of Perg offers summer visitors pleasant walks and excursions both on the plain and in the wooded mountains. The town of Perg is surrounded by forest on its entire northern side, by the beautifully maintained Stephaniehain with its many resting places and beautiful views. (Created on the occasion of the marriage of Crown Prince Rudolf to Stephanie of Belgium on 10 May 1881). This beautiful nature park was created for Perg in an exemplary and solid manner thanks to the care of Mr Thannheiser, Mr Fries and Mr Burgholzer, who were eager members of the beautification association. Summer visitors can hike for hours in the berry- and mushroom-rich forests along the Naarntal valley, relax in the aromatic forest air, enjoy a meal in the Naarntal valley's restaurants and take a refreshing dip at any time to refresh their tired limbs.
The Schartmüller family offers home-style cooking at customer-friendly prices, which you can enjoy in a dining room for groups of up to 50 people.
In addition, the Gasthaus zum Einhorn has several guest rooms, which are equipped with shower/bath and WC as well as TV/Sat.
The museum that never closes
The fascinating world of millstones
around the clock
The millstone museum Steinbrecherhaus offers a unique opportunity to experience the history and culture of the Perger millstone crushers around the clock. With an innovative audio guide system, you can explore the various exhibition areas of the freely accessible site at Mühlsteinstraße 43 at any time and at your own pace. The informative and entertaining narrations bring historical objects to life and enable a deep understanding of the town of Perg's past.
The millstone is one of the oldest, most important and above all vital tools of mankind. Because the millstone is the prerequisite for our daily bread. Even in the Bible, in the Book of Moses, it says: "You shall not seize the mill or the millstone, for whoever does so seizes life!
And for centuries, millstones have ensured a certain prosperity for the small market town of Perg. After all, the Perg millstone quarries were famous far and wide and were the largest in the old k&k monarchy.
