In Oberranna fascinates the beautiful St. Mary’s chapel “Magna Mater Austriae”. The Latin name can be translated into “the great mother of Austria” – During the time of reign of the Habsburger family Mary was the patron saint of all Austrian regions!
Today a little bit forgotten:
The famous pilgrimage town Mariazell in the Steiermark region used to be the state shrine of the Habsburg Empire. The figure “Magna Mater Austriae”, a 48 cm high statue of St. Mary, is worshiped there.
However, the pilgrimage church Mariahilf in Passau is much closer to us as hikers on the Donausteig hiking trail. In front of the church's miraculous image of Mary the fled Austrian imperial couple prayed daily for help against the Turkish who stood before Vienna. At that time Mary was announced as the symbolic leader of the imperial army which went into battle with the battle cry “Mariahilf”. After the victory over the Turkish the worship of Mary flared up.
“Magna Mater Austriae” – only a few words, but with a great meaning!
In the old Niederkeßla area of today's municipality of St. Aegidi, there is still much talk of the Pankrazkirche church and the well with healing water. The Pankrazkirche was built around 1000 years ago in honour of St. Pankrazius, the patron saint of the nobility, and became an important pilgrimage church as a branch church of the Engelszell monastery. Every year on the Sunday after St Peter and St Paul, a veritable stream of pilgrims poured into the church until the 18th century. Many pilgrims came on horseback, sometimes as many as 3,000. Emperor Joseph II closed the church in 1784 and it was cleared for demolition. In place of the mighty church today stands a small chapel with a domed roof, inside which the water bubbles merrily. The spring rises under the altar and flows into a moss-covered granite grander. This water is very fresh and has a slightly bitter flavour. It is considered to be healing for humans and animals, which is why visitors come all the time to bottle it. The site on the edge of the "Kößlbachtal" nature reserve has a special aura and conveys complete peace and tranquillity

Der Natur was zurückgeben…

To give back nature…
The shore areas of the Danube are influenced severely by humans and their hydraulic engineering measures. The Danube gorge offers naturally, due to its deeply narrow valley, only few floodplains. Additionally, through river regulations, constructions and the planting of foreign trees (e.g. spruce trees) suitable areas for river meadows are endangered or lost. Today only a very small portion of meadow landscape remains. However, the floodplains have important functions for the landscape balance like water detention, self-cleaning, stabilisation of waters and provides a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. The shores of the Danube are nearly consistently secured with riprap and only accompanied by a tiny woodland strip. Today, shallow water zones and sedimentation areas like islands, bays and gravel banks are increasingly created again. Many of these projects are planned or already executed – in Engelhartszell such projects were already done.
Above the fortress “Burg Rannariedl” once lied a massive castle, which was robbed and burnt down by enemies – how the knight survived and what’s the role of the brave maiden in the story, you can read in the next Danube legend.
In our cozy and stylish restaurant, we delight your palate and your eyes with classics - freshly prepared with seasonal, regional products - from Austrian and Persian cuisine.
The late antique fortress of Oberranna, probably called STANACUM by the Romans, is located in the municipal area of the Danube market town of Engelhartszell.
This important border post on the Danube Limes is around 1700 years old and the best-preserved ancient building in Upper Austria. As the northern border of the Roman Empire, the Danube Limes ran along the Danube from Regensburg to the Black Sea and was part of the approximately 6000 km long Limes around the Mediterranean from Scotland to Morocco. Since July 2021, the Danube Limes with all its excavation sites has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The history of the Imperium Romanum at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Danube Limes is exciting. And it becomes even more exciting when it is brought to life with augmented reality. Between Passau and Schlögen, new life is now being breathed into it with modern technology. Follow Severinus of Noricum to immerse yourself in the eventful history of the Danube Limes World Heritage Site and see what is still there today. Uncomplicated, simple and playfully explained - making history fun!

Potatoes - Our strengths:
Sauwald v odka is a premium distillate made from Sauwald potatoes. It is distilled purely from the Freya variety and refined with primary rock water. The special variety and the dilution with this soft, natural water make the vodka an experience for the tongue and palate. Sauwald vodka is no ordinary distillate but, as the Polish word suggests, a "water" to enjoy.
As Sauwald potatoes grow on the "G'stecken" (on a slope), Sauwald vodka is bottled at an angle. The visual reference to the hilly terrain creates a link to the Sauwald region.

The Collegiate Church has a steeple that rises 76 meters tall and is the most superb example of rococo architecture in Austria. The Church was built between 1754 and 1764 and is decorated with valuable art items by Johann Georg Üblher, Joseph Deutschmann and Bartolomeo Altomonte. The modern mural painting on the nave ceiling was created by Prof. Fritz Fröhlich in 1957.

TRAPPISTBEER-BREWERY
Trappist Brewery St. Engelszell is the most recent addition to the portfolio of Trappist breweries that were historically «limited» toTrappist breweries in Belgium, Holland, and France. Although the Trappist monks of St. Engelszell follow the traditional definition of Trappist beers (big, strong, complex) they have decided to use their local idiosyncrasy and history to create two distinctly different recipes. Both recipes are inspired by the unique landscape around the monastery. By incorporating locally grown ingredients St. Engelszell expresses its deep belief that such products should be produced in complete harmony with highest ethical and ecological standards.
The entire valley is covered with trees and only a small part belongs to the Nature Preserve. All the rest is still cultivated by its owners, the local farmers. It is a truly unique place to relax and unwind, to make endless walks or to collect berries, mushrooms and flowers. Kößlbach brook marks the border between the towns of Engelhartszell, Waldkirchen and St. Aegidi. The minor Kößlbachtal valley offers a varied fauna and flora as well as countless buildings rich in history.
