Short description:

Interesting hike to the highest elevation of the Alpine foothills, Haugstein Mountain.
Along the way, a visit to the "Trout circus with mill museum" is highly recommended. Those interested in culture can visit the market church, the new Gothic church is Stadl, the artistically designed stations of the cross and the Jagabild, the hunter memorial in the district of Schärding

Description:

From the town hall, the way leads past the market church, up the road, after some 500m into the forest on the left. Continue uphill to the sawmill, and in direction of Stadl to Mühlbach, where the trail turns off tot he left to the "Trout Circus". Then it goes through Schöfberg and Edt to Stadl.
From the church up to the forest, along the stations of the cross to the "Jagabild".
Legend has it that Corporal Greiner got caught by poachers. They tied him head down a beech tree just above an anthill. In great distress he prayed to the Blessed Mother. A white deer bit the ropes in two, saving him from a certaqin death. In his great gratitude he put up an image of the Blessed Mother. Later on, a chapel was built. To the summit of Haugstein, the highest elevation in the Alpine foothills (895 m), it`s about 20 minutes. Right of the chapel a forest road leads to the district road, continuing forest the trail leads downhill to Engelhartszell.



Tip:

Haugstein summit - with 895 m the highest elevation in Innviertel; the legend of the Jagabild; in Stadl activity centre you’ll find the P.-Johannes Schasching Hall and in Stadl Church a memorial plaque to Father Johannes Schasching, an important Jesuit, social ethicist, university professor and author.
He was a leading proponent of the Cathodic social teaching.
