Description:

From the main square, follow the main street and proceed via Rosenauerstraße, Doppelbauerweg, and Leisenhofstraße to the Collegium Petrinum. The Episcopal High School was built in the late 19th century in the Historicist style and is said to have over 999 windows. From there, take the steep Way of the Cross up to Pöstlingberg (537 m, the “Acropolis of Linz”).

At the highest point stands the pilgrimage basilica “Seven Sorrows of Mary,” visible from afar. Don’t miss the view of Linz on the Danube from the panoramic plateau. The “Pöstlingberg Adventure World” also includes the Grottenbahn: Housed in a former fortification tower, it guides visitors of all ages through a colorfully illuminated fairy-tale world. The basement features a scale model of Linz’s main square as it appeared around 1900; scenes from well-known children’s fairy tales can be seen in the side alleys.

Via Samhaberstraße and Hohe Straße, you’ll reach Schablederweg, which you’ll now follow steadily downhill. Tip for animal lovers: Here you have the option to turn right onto the pedestrian path leading to Hohe Straße, where you’ll find the Linz Zoo.

A few meters up Hagenstraße, turn right onto Berggasse. You’ll cross the tracks of the Pöstlingbergbahn, which has been in operation since 1898 and is Europe’s steepest adhesion railway. Continue down the steep Berggasse, cross Rudolfstraße, and head down Talgasse to Obere Donaustraße. There, take the stairs up to the New City Hall, built in the traditional local “Vierkanter” style. Finally, cross the Nibelungen Bridge to return to the main square.

This route can be combined with a trip up or down the Pöstlingbergbahn.

Directions:

From Linz’s main square, walk first along the main street, Rosenauerstraße, then along Doppelbauerweg and Leisenhofstraße to the Collegium Petrinum. The Episcopal High School was built at the end of the 19th century. From there, take the steep Way of the Cross up to Pöstlingberg (537 m).

In addition to the Pöstlingberg Railway and the zoo, the “Pöstlingberg Adventure World” also includes the Grottenbahn with its unique fairy-tale world, the Baroque pilgrimage basilica, and the rose garden. On a clear day, the view from the panoramic plateau over the city of Linz extends all the way to the Alpine foothills.

Take the Hohe Straße to reach the Schablederweg, which you’ll follow mostly alongside the tracks of the Pöstlingbergbahn as you head downhill. After about 200 meters, you can turn right onto Hohe Straße, where you’ll find the Linz Zoo. If you stay on Schablederweg, you’ll reach a point where you cross the Pöstlingbergbahn railway line. Via Berggasse and Talgasse, you’ll reach Obere Donaustraße. From there, walk past the New City Hall, under the bridge, and along the Ars Electronica Center back to the starting point.

From here, you’ll have a beautiful view of Linz’s cultural mile along the Danube: the Ars Electronica Center, the Lentos Art Museum Linz, the Brucknerhaus, and Linz Castle. From here, you can also cross the Nibelungen Bridge directly to explore the main square and the Old Town of Linz.
