SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:

Saint Wolfgang and Pupping
Wolfgang was born in 924 in Pfullingen (Swabia). In 968 he was ordained priest by Saint Ulrich. His missionary zeal drove him in the following years as far as Hungary. In 972 he was appointed bishop of Regensburg. He distinguished himself above all as a courageous church reformer in his office. In 976 he fled to the Salzkammergut during an internal church uprising against him, lived about five years as a hermit at Falkenstein on Lake Wolfgang (this place has since become an important pilgrimage site) and founded a monastery in today’s St. Wolfgang before returning to Regensburg. On his last visitation trip he fell ill on the ship coming from Passau, went ashore in the district of Brandstatt, in Pupping, and died on 31.10.994 in the chapel of Saint Otmar there. He is patron saint of sculptors, woodworkers, charcoal burners, carpenters and boatmen.

His message for today: Courage – to leave old paths and take new paths, to risk something for one’s visions and to rebuild life.

On the Wolfgang round I always ask myself the question of what I still want to (continue to) build in my life.

Directions:

Starting from the Pupping municipal office, we head towards the glider airfield along a little-used road. Passing the glider airfield, we follow the signpost to Schaunburg into the forest.
After a short climb, we reach the beautiful Schaunburg castle ruin. In good weather you can enjoy a magnificent view all the way to the mountains. After a short break, we go to the parking lot, immediately turn left downhill to the Landl Chapel and hike along a quiet, relaxing forest path enjoying the view back to the Danube. From the Landl Chapel, we stroll slightly downhill to the left along a road to Seebach to the jumping hill facility. From there, we go along the vegetable fields via Gstötternau to Brandstatt to the ferry dock. Next, we continue along the vegetable fields of the Pupping farms (farmers) to Pupping. The end of our circular hiking trail is the monastery in Pupping. Here we enjoy with all our senses the beautifully designed monastery garden with the Jägerstätter Chapel. The generously designed herb spiral invites you to smell and taste.

Tip:
Beautiful circular route through the vegetable growing area of the Pupping farmers, with a challenging climb to the Schaunburg ruin, wide view over the Eferding basin, monastery church with monastery garden and meditation path, Safety guidelines:
In winter, the hiking trail is partially closed because safe footing is not possible due to the steep slope.Equipment:
Hiking backpack (including rain cover), sturdy footwearAdditional information:
