The library is run jointly by the municipality of Enns and the parish of Enns-St.Marien. We see ourselves as a public institution that offers you a comprehensive cultural programme.
The "Enns Public Library" was founded at the end of the 19th century. This long-standing tradition of one of the oldest public libraries was only interrupted by the war.
After the Second World War, the library was reopened in Pfarrgasse and moved to the premises of the remodelled Franciscan church at the end of the 1970s.
Josef Rögl, headmaster of the secondary school, ran the library on a voluntary basis until 1978. The subsequent library manager, Consul Hermann Mayr, expanded the library to such an extent that it became the largest volunteer-run library in Austria.
Under a contractual agreement dated 1 January 1993, the parish of Enns-St. Marien and the municipality of Enns jointly run the public library.
From 1993 to 2010, the library was managed full-time by Mrs Silvia Deleja-Hotko. During this period, the library also moved to its current location at Kirchengasse 3 and reopened on 8 December 1998.
In 2010, Mrs Susanna Penz took over the full-time management.
Mrs Elfi Rothmayer has been managing the public library since July 2019.
