EXPERIENCE THE WONDER OF BREAD
Bread is our daily bread. No other food plays as prominent a role in our daily lives, in cultures, religions and, not least, in our use of language. The PANEUM – Wunderkammer des Brotes takes us on a journey into this fascinating world, from the invention of bread to the bread diversity of today. Arts and culture objects from the last 9,000 years and many parts of the world invite you to marvel and listen. Dive into the history and stories about bread. The PANEUM is an experience for all the senses – an exhibition intended to open eyes, ears, mouths and minds to the wonder of bread.
Egyptian grain mummies and toy cars, Peruvian totem poles and Meissen porcelain, Chinese granaries, guild equipment, paintings and thousands of books – the collection that forms the foundation of the PANEUM spans not only the ages, but also the world. And it is brought together by one important staple: bread.
The purpose of the collection is twofold. On the one hand, it takes us on a journey through time and space, from the probably accidental “invention” of bread in the Neolithic period to Egyptian sophistication and Roman efficiency, mediaeval bakers’ pride and modern industrialisation to today’s almost immeasurable bread diversity. On the other hand, the collection shows how bread’s journey begins on the farmlands and continues, through mills and bakeries, into our homes. The stations along this path have not changed over the millennia, and yet nothing has remained the same. This is also noticeable in the PANEUM.
The PANEUM tour lasts approximately one hour. Group visits are possible by prior arrangement only. With an audio guide (available in many languages), individual visits are possible at any time during opening hours. The last admission is one hour prior to the closing time.
