Memorial Linz I and Linz III concentration camps

The rectangular, roughly hewn stone is located near the site of the former Linz I and Linz III satellite camps of the Mauthausen concentration camp.
Concentration camp prisoners were exploited by the Nazi regime in the construction of industrial plants and arms factories. On the precincts of the Hermann Göring Werke stood the barracks of two subsidiary camps of Mauthausen, Linz I and III. The prisoners of Linz I, which was located near the Danube, had to do forced labour in Hochofenschlacke Linz GmbH, founded in 1942. The fi rst bombing raid of Linz on 25 July 1944
destroyed this camp, killing around 150 of its inmates. The prisoners housed in Linz III, which had been built shortly before in Lunzerstraße, were made to do forced labour in the Eisenwerke Oberdonau and to clear the debris after air raids.
