Rest area Weinbau Gmeiner in Weinzierl near Perg. Tradition in stone and wine... Kaolin mining is a speciality in the region. Kaolin, or china clay, is a fine, white rock with kaolinite as its main component. It is used in the manufacture of paper and porcelain, but also in the cosmetics and food industries. Its occurrence has been known for a long time, and there are reports from 1827 of "white earth" being used to whiten soldiers' uniforms. Kaolin is still mined today. Another special feature is the revival of the wine-growing tradition, which has not existed for more than 200 years. With the help of an EU Leader project, viticulture and the establishment of a wine competence centre are being made possible in Weinzierl. Even the name Weinzierl hints at the former winegrowing tradition, as a Weinzürler was a winegrower.
