Rocky dwellings... The steep rocky outcrops of the Donauleitn are among the most impressive landscape elements. Light stands of pine and oak colonise these habitats. The reptile fauna is particularly rich here, but the eagle owl, the largest owl species, also feels at home here. With a bit of luck, the attentive observer can spot them on their evening forays. If you pay particular attention, you might catch a glimpse of one of the ground dwellers. Several species of lizard rustle through the bushes, including the green lizard. With a total length of 35 cm, it is one of the largest native lizards. The name refers to the greenish colouring of the adult animals. The blue-coloured throat of the males during the mating season is particularly striking. In the Donauleiten, it favours rocky areas and rocky slopes with plenty of bushes and thorny shrubs where it can hide from predators.
The Haichenbach ruins are also popularly known as Kerschbaumer Schlössl - the Danube legend "Spit on the revenge!" tells the story of how the castle got its name.
