Idyllic rest area at the mouth of the Kleine Mühl/Danube Shy predators... This shy fellow is the otter (Lutra lutra), a marten that lives by the water. It grows to around 130 cm long, is found throughout Europe and lives mainly at dusk in hard-to-reach riparian zones. Its territory can be up to 40 km long and is characterised by scent marks. So-called "otter trails" refer to paths that it always uses to enter and exit its underground burrows. Otters are omnivores and therefore not very picky. Their prey includes fish, insects, crustaceans and mammals. Unfortunately for some pond owners, otters naturally like to hunt where it is easy for them to do so and have emptied many a fish pond. This is often prevented by fencing or diversion ponds.
In Niederkappel, a "mysterious maid" once came to the aid of a poor farming family. An exciting Danube legend tells the story of this hard-working woman and how poverty was still wiped off the farm.
