Fuchsloch rest area in the Sauwald forest The Sauwald: primeval rock south of the Danube As far as Aschach, the Donausteig trail alternates between the Sauwald forest and the Danube gorge and its tributary valleys. The Sauwald, a plateau-like elevation of crystalline primary rock, has a fairly uniform landscape, which is dominated by a few mountain ridges in the "Hochsauwald". The high proportion of forest in the "Hochsauwald" creates a connection with other regions, which represents an important migration route for various mammals. However, site-appropriate forest formations, such as the fir-beech forest, have largely been replaced by spruce forests. Near-natural forest management and conversion to mixed forests is desirable here.
The story "The farmer - a fox" tells how the Fuchsloch got its name.
