Tabakfabrik is establishing itself as the heart of a vibrant, reimagined city district around the four cornerstones of creativity, social development, employment and education.
After giving up cigarette production at the Austrian Tabacco Manufactory Linz, the areal was purchased by the city of Linz in 2009. Build by the international famous architect Prof. Peter Behrens between 1929 and 1935 with a total area of almost 80.000m² and its steel framed construction and detailed functionality the estate counts as a monument of modernist movement in Europe. Several of the movements leading names, e.g. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, worked for Peter Behrens. At present the area is used for cultural happenings, working spaces and shops. But there is much more to come in the future!
