Visit the famous Jahresstiege steps, built by poor and jobless locals, amid the romantic Rodltal valley.
During the 19th century Alois Peither was a famous doctor in Gramastetten. Once he owned the steep and hilly area behind the church adjacent to the Große Rodl river. Peither tried to give employment to the poor by terracing the slopes and cultivating hop fields. Later he focused on silkworm breeding. To make the area easily accessible the Jahresstiege steps, consisting of 365 granite stairs, were built.
The hiking path from the church square to the Rodl river became a splendid Nature Trail in 1987. Countless wooden boards, created by Josef Altmüller (former headmaster of the elementary school) and Fritz Stanzel (master carpenter), tell you everything about the local fauna and flora and Gramastetten´s exciting history.
