Mighty Greinburg Castle houses Upper Austria´s Museum of Shipping History, preserving and presenting the rich heritage and historic connections with the area´s rivers.
Greinburg Castle occupies a dramatic position high above the Valley, jutting out over the Danube at the base of a precipitous cliff. This is Austria´s oldest Residential Castle and has been erected around 1490. The massive walls house the history of the Saxon-Coburg-Gotha Dynasty and Austria´s only collection of historic ship models. The permanent collection is presented in three galleries, dedicated to the Danube, to the Inn-Enns-Salzach Region, and to the Traun River. The Danube Gallery features a fascinating collection of intricate model boats: The 15 meters long model of a major Danube Ship, for example, encompasses one main boat and six side boats. What´s more, there are regional types of rafts and related items on display. Among the exhibition´s highlights is a model of the first Danube steamship, named "Maria Anna". The two galleries representing the tributary rivers to the Danube are focusing on rowing boats and rafts. Among the Museum´s noticeable features are models of old towns, such as the one showing historic Linz, dominated by the castle and the wooden bridge.
