New Cathedral - Mariendom

Linz, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather
  • Suitable for groups

As the largest church in Austria, the "New Cathedral", completed in 1924, offers space for around 20.000 people.

St. Mary's Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece and a haven of peace for visitors. Take a look at the wonderful stained-glass windows, such as the "Linz Window" or the "Emperor's Window". The interior gallery, which can be entered on guided tours, provides fascinating views of the church interior at a height of 15 metres. The tower tours are also recommended, during which you can enjoy a magnificent view of Linz.

The New Cathedral as a place of remembrance:
In 1934, the Reichsbund der katholischen deutschen Jugend Oberösterreich (Reich Association of Catholic German Youth of Upper Austria) placed inscriptions in memory of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuß on the entrance door to the eastern tower chapel. He had eliminated parliament in 1933, was largely responsible for the outbreak of the civil war in 1934 and was murdered during a National Socialist coup attempt in Vienna in July 1934. Inside the cathedral, a monument commemorates Franz Jägerstätter, who was beatified in 2007.

The the Reich Youth Association of German Catholics of Upper Austria mounted plaques on the entrance to the East Tower Chapel in 1934 in commemoration of Federal Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuß. Having outmanoeuvred Parliament in 1933, Dollfuß was responsible to a great extent for the Civil War; he was shot and killed in an attempted Nazi coup in July 1934. Inside the cathedral there is a monument to Franz Jägerstätter, who was beatified in 2007.
