The coat of arms of the municipality:
On the occasion of the market elevation, Mitterkirchen also receives a municipal coat of arms, which is described in the award certificate as follows: "Divided, above in gold a blue weir (as in the sign for waterway traffic); below in blue a golden, thoughtful boat." The municipal colours blue and yellow also correspond to this.

The name of the market town "Mittrinchirchin" was first mentioned in a document in 1111. However, archaeological finds in recent decades prove that Mitterkirchen can look back on a much longer past: From 1981 to 1988, the so-called Mitterkirchen barrow cemetery was scientifically analysed. This mainly brought to light finds from the Hallstatt period, the early Middle Ages and even the Neolithic period. Since 1991, the open-air museum "Keltendorf" Mitterkirchen has been demonstrating what life may have been like in Machland several thousand years ago with over 20 artefacts.

But the museum is not the only attraction in Mitterkirchen. The late Gothic church, which characterises the market square, has been offering visitors a special atmosphere since its renovation in 2004 with sophisticated lighting elements and olive wood.
The Mitterkirchen bathing lake in the village of Weisching offers recreation to thousands of visitors every year. Equipped with a tennis court, a beach volleyball court, a boccia court and a spacious children's playground, it offers young and old a local recreation area for sport and leisure. But that's not all: there are also numerous hiking and cycling trails, fishing waters, a large sports field, as well as tarmac and bowling alleys. The 20 villages in the municipality offer something for everyone.

The flood disaster in 2002 put the market town in a difficult financial situation. The damage totalled 2.8 million euros. All buildings and facilities - such as the Celtic village, primary school, sewage treatment plant, nursery school and office building - which are under the administration of the market town had to be renovated. The infrastructure has also undergone rapid change since then:
The village of Hütting, with over 60 households, was relocated to create additional retention space. The houses closest to the Danube were gradually demolished and some were rebuilt outside the village centre in the "Neu Hütting" settlement.
Construction of the Machland dam began in 2009. Since the beginning of 2012, the market town of Mitterkirchen im Machland has been flood-proof.
