With the enlargement of the EU to include the neighbouring countries to the east, the customs guard was disbanded in Austria. Austria's oldest police force has ceased to exist. In the Mühlviertel region in particular, the customs guard had stood for tradition and security. The customs guard was very successful on the border with the Czech Republic until the very end.
Now the customs guard only exists in museums. To commemorate the many former customs guard sections at the border, in the summer of 2007, employees of the former customs guard at the Hammern border crossing erected and renovated a former customs guard hut, as it was used on patrol duty.
In this shelter of the former customs guard department Rainbach im Mühlkreis, the tasks and activities of the customs guard are displayed and presented on a small scale with historical objects, photos, documents and uniforms. It is intended to serve as a reminder of the customs officers' achievements in the border region with the Czech Republic.
This customs guard hut is open to the public and can be visited at any time. Keys are available at the municipal offices of Leopoldschlag, Rainbach i.M. and Windhaag/Fr. and from the landowner Martina Greul, who lives right next to the refuge, as well as at the Leopoldschlag border police station.
