The castle was expanded under the Bavarian dukes Albrecht I and Ludwig the Bearded in the 14th and 15th centuries to become an important state fortress. In the 17th century, the mighty high castle with its imposing keep experienced its heyday. The castle was almost completely destroyed by devastating fires in 1724 and 1775 and was never rebuilt.
