Veste Oberhaus & Oberhaus Museum

Passau, Bayern, Deutschland

High above Passau, on the Georgsberg, stands one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Europe: Veste Oberhaus. Founded in 1219 as a stronghold and residence for the prince-bishops of Passau, the castle has successfully withstood many threats over the centuries. In the Renaissance, it was extended to include state rooms and became “Oberhaus palace”. In the 17th century, modern fortifications were added to make it the fortress it is today.

A STRIKE FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO RECENT HISTORY

History comes to life in a unique way within its walls, which are over 800 years old. Where the prince-bishops of Passau once resided, the Oberhausmuseum now presents exciting exhibitions on medieval life in the castle, the eventful history of Passau, and its importance as a trading centre on three rivers. Historical weapons, shining suits of armour, Gothic panel paintings and many other valuable exhibits invite you to take a journey into the past. At the heart of Veste Oberhaus is St George’s Chapel, with its unique cycle of 14th century frescoes.

From the observation tower and from the Linde Battery you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Bavarian Forest, Passau’s historic Old Town, and the confluence of the rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz.
