Wake up!

18.07.2026 / 19:00
Haibach ob der Donau, Gemeindeamt Haibach
Theater

A play by Horst Pühringer & concert by the group "Trollferd"
A dramatic scene written for the occasion is performed at the original location of the "Ulrich Tavern" (Zeller). Under the title "Wake up!", the Protestant preacher Hans Cummerer (1589), who is recorded in the parish chronicles, gives a fictitious speech to the peasant warriors.

It is the eve of the rebellion and the orator pulls out all the rhetorical stops to convince the humiliated people, harassed by the occupying power, to revolt. It was a God-ordained war that would bring back freedom. All objections - especially those raised by women - are refuted and everyone is sworn to the common cause. Finally, they sing Luther's chorale "May God have mercy on us" together. The preacher's rhetoric and charisma set a movement in motion. Religious, social, economic and political arguments are used in a targeted manner to ignite the rebellion, which is doomed to fail from the outset. The aim is also to create associations with today: Where and how are we being influenced? What about values such as freedom and democracy? Where does information begin to turn into manipulation?
