Works by Morton Feldman, John Cage and György Kurtág explore the boundaries between sound, silence and meaning.
Feldman's fragile "The Viola in my Life I-III" stands alongside the structural openness of Cage's "Seven" and excerpts from his legendary "Lecture on Nothing", performed by Friedrich Eidenberger. The program is complemented by selected miniatures from Kurtág's "Signs, Games and Messages" - subtle musical messages for solo viola. Each of these compositions is characterized by a subtle and detailed sound texture. The works are characterized by long, floating sounds and a sparing use of musical gestures. The viola plays a central role, often as a supporting timbre that blends into the texture of the music or gently stands out.
