The path was designed in the steep Donauleiten so that it could partly be operated as a "one-way system" and was dug into the terrain. The depth was about 2.5 m, the ditch bottom 1.5 m, so that the path at the upper edge of the embankment was about 5 m wide. This had the advantage that the paths were hardly visible and thus travelers, drovers (merchants), and trade transports were protected from robbers as well as wild animals as much as possible, unseen and undisturbed. They also offered protection against falling and toppled trees. Trees lying across hollow paths could be passed under after removing some branches.
