Description:
St. Martin is the starting point for this enjoyable Donausteig-stage. The idyllic village lies on the rural plateaux of the Mühlviertler Highlands. Its richness is discovered only with the knowledge of its important history - a village that wants to be discovered! The stage starts directly in the town centre. After the settlement areas, we walk on back roads through the rural landscape of the hilly plateau. Beautiful views complete this experience. At the farm hamlet of Reith, we leave the plateau and walk on a dirt road down into the forest of the narrow Aubachtals (valley). At the bottom of the valley, a forest path brings us further downstream until the Aubach (stream) flows into the Pesenbachs (stream). Now one of the top 10 natural highlights of the Donausteig begins with the hike through the beautiful Pesenbachtal (valley)! We follow the atmospheric meanders of the stream over forest and meadow trails downstream through the wooded valley - a peaceful enjoyment of nature! After a brief detour into the rural cultural landscape on the left of the Valley we walk back down into the forest of Pesenbachtals (valley). We discover the bizarre rock spire of the "kerzensteins", the landmark of the Pesenbachtal, at the side of the Valley! At the bottom of the valley begins a romantic creek and stream section. The Valley narrows to become gorge-like. Partly on a splendid hiking path, partly on wooden track systems we follow the water downhill. Mystic rock towers, spurting water cascades, characteristic vegetation,... - a "wild" nature enjoyment! Highlights are the „Teufelsbottiche“, the „Steinerne Dachl“ and the „Blaue Gasse“. After these, the valley widens again and the Pesenbach calms down. We accompany it a bit further, but then climb up the left side of the Schuhplattlersteig and hike downhill a forest trail to the traditional Inn Schlager, overlooking the whole Valley. A meadow path brings us back to the Pesenbach, which we follow downstream to the bridge. Leaving the stream behind us, the venerable Prälatensteig (trail) leads us uphill on the right side of the Valley. We then walk through magnificent forests down in the direction of the Danube. A large forest-free terrace opens up yet another wonderful view of the wooded Upper Danube valley: into the fertile Eferding basin to the distant Salzkammergut! At the "develish" Faustschlössl (castle), we finally reach the Danube. Here the wonderful views of the historical shore line across from Danube market Aschach inspire us. In an arc across the Danube bridge , we finally reach downstream the picturesque Aschach. The Donausteig - simply amazing!

Directions:
From the Donausteig- starting point "St. Martin" we follow the market street to the South, leave the area and cross the Landshagger main road straight ahead. The road makes straight a sharp right bend, leads then though in a long left arc slightly uphill to the farm hamlet of Reith. After a short downhill walk, turn left into the dirt road just before the houses. Now the road continues first across meadows, and then later through the forest down to the Aubach (stream). At the bottom of the Valley we walk right along the forest path and continue to the bridge over the Pesenbach (stream). Cross the stream and turn right and follow the Pesenbach (stream) over beautiful forest and meadow paths downstream. After a historic house with a chapel, the Donausteig leads in a forest clearing left up the side of the Valley. Once at the top, we continue on the right around a fram and on a meadow path turn at the next junction down again into the Pesenbachtal (valley). Shortly after the entry into the forest a foot path branches of left, which quickly brings us uphill to the Kerzenstein (stone). From there the descent on a steep trail leads back into the valley. Partly on a splendid hiking path, partly on wooden track systems we follow the Pesenbach downstream. The Donausteig climbs approximately 500 m after the "Blauen Gasse" left over the Schuhplattlersteig steeply up the side of the Valley. From the Hofratskanzel the trail continues comfortable downhill to the Schlagerwirt Inn. From here, via a meadow path we reach again the Pesenbach (stream) and continue walking to the bridge on the left. There, we cross the stream, overcome on the right valley side of the Prälatensteig and walk down towards the Danube valley. Follow the Landshaager main street for a short period, and then turn right off onto a roadway which leads in a left arc down to yet again the Landshagger main street. Here though, keep right and continue down the asphalt street, pass the Faustschlössl (castle) and reach the Danube. From here, we follow downstream along the embankment, cross the Aschacher Danube bridge, and walk on the opposite side of the Danube River Promenade upstream to Aschach.

To facilitate the orientation, the Donausteig was provided with its own orientation system - you will find the description here.
