By taking the Mühlviertel Bike Path, you will be immediately immersed in the mysterious and mystic granite landscape north of the Danube. The cycle path offers sporty pedallers challenging climbs time and again. At its starting point in Kramesau, it is connected to the Danube Cycle Path, and you can pedal hard on the very first stage to Neustift. After all, you have to make your way from the lowlands of the Danube valley to the highlands of the Mühlviertel. In the Bohemian Forest, you finally reach the border with the Czech Republic.

Ulrichsberg, with a remarkable glass collection of over 600 exhibits, reminiscent of the Schwarzenberg and Sonnenwald glassworks over 100 years ago, and Aigen-Schlägl with its large Premonstratensian canon monastery are your stops on the way through the Bohemian Forest. With a detour to the Textile Centre in Haslach, you will learn about the history of Mühlviertel linen weaving. Cycling further and further east, you come to Bad Leonfelden, where the moor and the teachings of Pastor Kneipp are effective for your health. You can also experience the spirit of the past in the school museum and at the Schwedenschanze. You should also stop off in Windhaag near Freistadt.

The later famous composer Anton Bruckner worked as a teacher in this village, which is commemorated by the Brucknerstüberl in the old schoolhouse. Also on the route of the Mühlviertel Cycle Path is the village of Sandl, a centre of rural reverse glass painting. In the Hinterglasmuseum you can discover the secrets of this art form. Passing Rosenhof Castle with the picturesque Rosenhof ponds, you reach Liebenau.
A few kilometres further on, you have the option of branching off to the east and further into the Waldviertel region.
The Mühlviertel Cycle Path itself now turns south and leads along the border with Lower Austria via Unterweißenbach and Königswiesen to the romantic Danube town of Grein with Greinburg Castle, which is well worth a visit, and the old town theatre, which is full of curiosities. Here you can reconnect to the Danube Cycle Path.

The Mühlviertel Cycle Path R5 is asphalted throughout except for short sections. The gravelled sections are in the Liebenau area around Hacklberg (approx. 4 km) and from Windhaag shortly before Sandl (approx. 3 km).
